You know what is mind boggling? It’s the fact that kids need to be 21 to have their first sip of alcohol, but at 15 they are getting their driver learner permit.

If they’re not mature enough to decide on their own drinking, maybe they’re not mature enough to operate huge machinery going at 75 mph.

It's almost not even satire at this point
This absurd oversensitivity about professors having sex with minors procured for them by sex criminals shows that campus cancel culture is out of control.

Nearly every panel I spoke on this year ended with the same question: "What gives you hope?"

My friends, that question expired years ago. (If you need receipts, my book Saving Us is literally a 300-page answer.)

The real question is: How are you PRACTICING hope?

Because Greta is right ..

It was an honor for MK and me to meet with Pope Leo XIV – a son of Illinois – to express the pride and reverence of the people of this great state. Pope Leo XIV’s message of hope, compassion, unity, and peace resonates with Illinoisans of all faiths and traditions.

I know that at this point it's a subplot in the Epstein files drama, but I feel compelled to point out, once again, that Larry Summers HAS NO BUSINESS teaching students at ANY university ever again!

Why Is Larry Summers Still Employed?
The revelations about the economist’s attempts to pressure a women into a “relationship”—with guidance from Jeffrey Epstein—should finally disqualify him from teaching students.

Environmentalism = bad is just a gobsmackingly dumb take. I like breathing clean air, drinking clean water, and having a habitable planet. Good lord.
If there’s no shale gas then there’s no shale gas, but I still think environmentalism is basically bad and politicians should focus more on material prosperity.

I can no longer follow the plot of this show. I suspect the writers and actors can’t either. I don’t think they have a show runner.

I am not being hyperbolic when I say that how Harvard and the economics profession respond to Larry Summers will determine who makes up the next generation of economists.

I hope Larry Summers being exposed as lacking discernment and judgement —as a liar, an abuser of his mentees, and the buddy of a child trafficker — will lay to rest the myth that skill on the math section of the SAT is the highest and most advanced form of human cognition.

My crazy idea for incorporating public feedback into city planning: You let residents vote for representatives in city government, and those people are empowered to implement the policies they promised while campaigning.
At Land Use (again) and it's literally all the same people it always is (myself included)...like who are we fooling that the same 75 people showing up every time is "the will of the people"? What a sham public process is sometimes, sadly

Just heard re: some ICE agents who raided a Chicago taqueria, then went back to the same taqueria for lunch the following week and got confused when the owner kicked them out, and I realized "jesus these doofuses really do believe we're all living in a video game where the NPCs have no memory"

Great reason to consider legalizing neighborhood commercial! I honestly hadn't even thought about this.
Like, seriously. One of the reasons one of the mods of r/everett was so excited about legalizing neighborhood commercial was that he just had to fix up a space in his house he wasn't using to have his shop-- and would no longer have to pay eye-watering commercial rent for shop space.

When you write the whole piece around the idea of “MeToo” as an adequate description of what caused specific men to lose specific positions, and when you do this incredibly weird cutesy business to avoid *mentioning what happened*, you do a disservice to readers.

Excellent analogy in this thread.
Thought experiment: what do you think would happen if your local police chief announced that henceforth, they would be shifting the majority of their resources to crack down on underage drinking. Three things would logically follow:

Trump is not tough on crime. He reassigns expert law enforcement in areas like child sex trafficking (imagine that) to immigration enforcement where their skills aren’t as relevant, making us more vulnerable to crime
“Homeland security agents investigating sexual crimes against children…have been redeployed to the immigrant crackdown…hampering their pursuit of child predators…efforts to combat human smuggling and sex trafficking have languished…”

His sincere updates on his attempted relationship with a student are so creepy and cringe, and then you remember the person Larry Summers is pouring his heart out to is DISGRACED CHILD SEX TRAFFICKER JEFFREY EPSTEIN, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHTEEN
The emails have Summers reporting to Epstein about his attempts to date a Harvard economics student & to hit on her during a seminar she was giving.
