Today's trail pics

If you have never been to the NJ pinelands (aka the Pine Barrens), you have no idea what a weird place it is. There's nothing else like it.

I submit today's trail pics as evidence.

This is as brutal a fact check as you are ever going to see. If you didn’t know @seancasten.bsky.social is an energy expert AND a fighter, now you do.
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

I shared this earlier just about Trump, but from the responses it's gotten, I'm beginning to think newspapers should run this piece every December, like the "Yes, Virginia..." letter, but for adults who dread going home for the holidays. (And they should pay royalties to @merrillmarkoe.bsky.social.)
I've said it before, but the key text I keep returning to for understanding this era is Merrill Markoe's essay on narcissism, because that post today is a textbook example of what she calls The Narcissist's Credo: "I'm the piece of shit the world revolves around."
Enough about You: My Explanation of Narcissism

Here's a slice from the CBCT of Jake Paul's jaw. I don't treat injuries like this. But he's going to be dealing with this for years. Looking at nerve damage and TMD issues at minimum. Possibly loss of teeth. Lingering headaches, muscle issues, and problems that money can't fix.

If you're not trans, I don't think I can fully explain how important this is.

It's so powerful that one of the most circulated science media publications in the world has come out and said "trans children are real and providing transition care improves their lives." That's groundbreaking.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

Just a note that I did this for a living for 20 years and I would have probably been fired and then sued and perhaps criminally prosecuted for such shoddy work. If all they're protecting is victim/family names I don't know of too many pages that are solid names.
The three documents after that sequentially are a straight run of 255 pages of fully blacked out pages – except for a tiny margin at the bottom of each page. 255 full pages like this.

One little thing to add to this: nice accidental reminder that the Beatles fans during the height of their popularity weren’t all white. The band refused to play for segregated audiences in the South too. Probably not what Bari means to invoke by using this imagery though!
I found it. The Bari Weiss/CBS News town hall promo for feminism does indeed use a 1964 photo of Beatles fans.

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin
