This is brilliant. That box cover was SUCH a feature of my childhood and I always did wonder about it myself!
"If you put a kid on the cover, you’re telling buyers it’s a kid game. If you put adults on the cover, you’re telling kids it’s a gateway to adulthood. This is basic aspirational psychology. They’ll feel like tiny professors. Or tiny villains. Both sell."

A heads-up state and federal agencies are actively monitoring online activity tied to criticism and protest of the immigration crackdown in New Orleans. That includes social media comments, posts, group chats, and other digital spaces.

Spotify is garbage on every count: Its treatment of artists, its ICE advertising, the CEO's investment in military AI, its leading role in the commodification and AI slopification of music, its terrible audio quality—you name it.

So I quit, and put together a complete guide to getting off Spotify:
How to quit Spotify
This Black Friday, here's a guide to finding the best Spotify alternative

The fact that a second strike like that in an armed conflict is definitely a war crime should not completely negate the fact that *there is no war* and ALL the strikes are cold-blooded murder. The whole chain of command are murderers.

Today I learned that NASA has a collection of free ebooks that can be downloaded as pdfs or ebub format.

The science books even include a children’s section with fun activites and coloring books!

We know everyone is asking for your money this month, but here's a twist: We're NOT asking you to donate in December, we're asking you to spread the word.

Help the trans people and allies who don't know Assigned Media's reputation for excellence and originality in trans news find us!

Also, to be clear, when a trans instructor at OU is being punished and targeted for quite fairly grading a terrible essay, it’s bizarre to see academics online debating the rubrics.

That’s…not the problem.

A trans postgrad has been suspended at OU for giving a poor grade to a fascist's illiterate essay, which, as the postgrad documents in detail, did not even attempt to answer the questions in the assignment.
every trans person i see post about the OU suspension knows that the suspended target is trans & a grad student, & has an innate awareness that this is about purging trans employees. every cis person i see thinks the target is a rando professor & that this is about giving conservatives good grades

Three evenings ago I read an article about using ice packs on the forehead to help beat insomnia. The original study was from 2011 IIRC. Apparently if you drop the temperature of your frontal lobe by a degree or so you trigger a cascade of sleepy time metabolic events.

Just a reminder that ordering books through an author’s @bookshop.org affiliate links supports independent bookstores AND authors.

In other words, your favorite authors get a lil’ extra money, as do actual bookstores (not that one billionaire website). A win-win.

Since I don’t want to steal credit from my friend Charlie Pellett, I do want to point out that he is the one that says “Stand clear of the closing doors, please.” I’m the voice that you were hear in the numbered line stations telling you how long before your train arrives.

I love this so much, especially as a trans transit nerd 😊🏳️‍⚧️
One of my favorite things is getting to tell friends who are new to NYC that the subway "stand clear of the closing doors please" voice is a trans woman named Bernie Wagenblast and she's amazing.

Elon Musk donated $277 million to Trump so he could steal the federal government’s data, dismantle the nation’s infrastructure, and stop foreign aid from going to nonwhite people. It’s a quid pro quo breathtaking in scope, corruption, and damage, & completely unprecedented in American history.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

DC is enforcing a “crackdown” on streeteries—outdoor seating for cafes—charging the cafes huge amounts of money to keep the facilities in place, and forcing them to use seating that doesn’t work in the winter. It’s a huge self-own, likely to end up hurting businesses, reducing street vibrancy.
Exclusive: Le Dip streetery to come down as D.C. crackdown reshapes outdoor dining
It's over for many D.C. streeteries, as the city starts to charge what you might call "road rent" and other fees.

Solid reporting by Texas Observer:
Small lakes in East Texas are being filled in with petrochemical-laced drilling mud, classified in Texas as "non-toxic" meaning mitigation to prevent spill-off is minimal.

What they can't say is that the elected Texas Railroad Commissioners are probably profiting.
Our top story, from @liseolsen.bsky.social and @psskow.bsky.social: East Texans are uniting to fight oil waste pits in bucolic areas near Louisiana—all run by an operator who’s been cited for dozens of violations, and a worker’s death.
