Under no circumstances do you "gotta hand it to" the NYP, but you have to admit it's pretty ballsy to use "unhinged" while technically never saying that it's false (because it's not)

Viewing geodesics as replacements for straight lines is attributed to Menelaus of Alexandria (c.70-140 CE): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menelau... His Book of Spherical Propositions survives in Arabic translation.

working for the intercept is already kind of a black mark imo, i see all kinds of shitty post left vibes posts from him, and he has cohosted two different podcasts with a far right journalist

ryan grim is extremely sus and it's unfortunate that dropsite news is often the most reputable outlet i see publishing material about for example palestine
Redfield is a Trump appointee and known crank. If COVID was circulating in summer of 2019, the entire timeline of the pandemic would be different. Chinese authorities were not "pushing the wet market narrative," they actively covered it up.

What is happening to people's brains over there

you can take a ball and stretch some string tight between two points and that alone would tell you a lot i would think
February 10, 2026 at 4:53 PM
hmm. i suppose that comes down to a question of whether you believe a line refers to something like the shortest path between points. i think it would be pretty weird to be interested in navigation on a sphere and not eventually notice how such shortest paths are shaped

i'm not claiming anyone involved in this story was not bright or something, it just seems like there's a significant gap that needs to be explained here. a reason for this not to come up

people talk a lot about the history of the parallel postulate, gauss secretly working in hyperbolic space, etc, but i never see anyone mention how obvious it is that parallel lines meet on a sphere hence in real life, on the earth, and how people just ignored that for almost 2000 years

I won’t support additional funding for ICE unless we put guardrails in place to make sure ICE is better trained and actually focused on making our communities safer.

no, in the sense that you would conclude that they hate you
February 10, 2026 at 3:45 PM
implicit here is the idea that actually dems do want to destroy the fascist gestapo, our concentration camp system, etc, but they're just higher level thinkers and strategists than their critics. having been alive for several years now, this seems to me to be post hoc rationalization
February 10, 2026 at 3:42 PM
the main argument liberals on here make in favor of the demands is that the weaker the restrictions requested, the worse republicans look when they reject them. coincidentally this strategy is independent of one's moral convictions and requires one to argue that DHS only needs a veneer of legitimacy

My grad student noticed that the cohomology of the Grassmannian Gr(k,n) with the sl_2 action from hard Lefschetz is isomorphic to Sym^{n-k}(Sym^k(C^2)). Is this well-known? Does anyone know a reference?
