You can tell that LotR was written by an academic because Gandalf disappears for like 20 years doing research to answer a single question.

This portion of this thread may be useful information for a number of folks who follow me.
This is part of why I *strongly* recommend anyone who makes assholes on the internet mad a lot should have a umbrella liability policy added to their homeowners' or renters' insurance, with a minimum coverage of $2m per incident, although we just increased ours to $5m just in case.

Seeing the absolute heaps of troll shit that land on even the most anodyne posts from large accounts leads me to the conclusion that a lot of folks ought not be allowed out in public.

Started losing my hair about when I turned 20. Started shaving my head in my mid 20s. So, I have been bald for more than 30 years. I do still grow some hair, and it reaches a point if I’m not shaving regularly where my attitude becomes “Get it off, get it off!” Like something from an alien movie.

So, it used to be that with actual real search you would put a query in and the search engine would return a bunch of pages and with a little filtering you could find one where an actual human being with expertise had answered the question. And, because it was written by an actual person… 1/2

If holidays are your jam, and you celebrate Christmas, I hope you’re having a fabulous one.

One tiny upside to having a cold is that nobody expects you to go anywhere on Christmas. We are having a very quiet day here at home, just the two of us.

*This year, I'm really feeling the joy of giving…to myself.

My K-12 school was weird. Starting from the very beginning we were taught to analyze social systems. You don’t have to like the rules, you don’t have to want to preserve them, but you can’t use them to your advantage if you don’t understand them. It’s much easier to change that which you can use.

Interesting thread. Utterly alien to my process, but one of the great things about writing is there are 1,001 to it and every single one is right.
Lotta people in the replies here taking "hate" SUPER LITERALLY, so as one of these "hates writing, loves having written" writers, let me explain.

(And to head off any assumptions: I have not and never will use Automated Wordslop Generators to "write" for me.)

1/x
I can't remember who said it, but the quote is "I hate writing, I love HAVING WRITTEN" which I think is pretty understandable. The actual process of writing can be absolutely grueling and make you hate yourself. You do it anyway because that's the accomplishment. "AI" is not the solution, obviously

Especially if you don't have personal memories of what Health Insurance was like before the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

I have direct personal memories of this time and still it's hard to remember how bad it actually was.

Been playing Ghost of Yotei while I’m home sick this week and I am reminded of the very different things people want out of a game as I fight a stupidly hard boss battle. I want reasonable challenges that don’t destroy my aging tendons and lots of story. Mostly Yotei delivers 1/2
