I received a thank you from some library workers for this piece after a Chicago city budget was passed this week without the previously proposed library cuts I described here. Many thanks to everyone who made noise about this issue. There were wins and losses in this budget, but this win matters.

Ten years since my father was killed by a left-turning driver while crossing the street in a crosswalk with his sister the morning before the annual family Christmas party. Still a shocking and impossible loss.

The country removed the crosswalk lines after his death. It wasn’t safe to cross there.

Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."
