A great day overall for fossil capital. Trump is less worried about who exactly will lead the Venezuelan government, even saying Machado won’t have the respect to govern Venezuela. What matters is that US oil companies get to drill and sell oil to other countries too.

There is a big disconnect between people who know immediately *why* this is all wrong and have the context and everyone else (including many who know *that* it’s wrong.) Thinking today about how to bridge that gap.

Extrajudicial rendition isn’t an arrest. We have no jurisdiction in Caracas.
How does launching air strikes and a commando raid fall under the remit of self defense for an arrest operation

Drugs are the primary boogeyman used to justify imperial intervention in Latin America. When academics and activists like myself talk about legalizing drugs, it's not only to keep drug users safe from the toxic supply (which is reason enough), it's about geopolitical stability. It affects YOU

As I’ve been saying, this has major ramifications for nuclear launch procedures. It’s foolish to think legality offers any kind of constraint on what is clearly a de facto unilateral power for the president to launch a first strike.
Perhaps now people will stop wishcasting about the US military refusing illegal orders. That's not a thing that happens. The 100% compliance rate with using civilian boats for target practice was a bit of a tell.

The issue is not just that this person should not wield the power to unilaterally make war, it’s that no one should have that power. Absolutely no one.

The Trump Corollary Is a Threat to the World - The Call
Trump’s national security strategy includes new or reformulated threats. It is old-style imperialism, adapted to deal with the current challenges to US hegemonic power.

I think the reason to point out that Trump is everything he accuses his enemies to be is not to object to hypocrisy is to make clear he offers (bullshit) excuses not reasons.

Absolute clown shit.
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

Once again, decades of ludicrous ‘Drug War’ and ‘War on Terror’ rhetoric and policy laid the groundwork for this. These are the sorts of things that must be uprooted.

Three million people live in Caracas, five million in the metro area. It's one of the densest cities in South America. Remember this in the morning when they try to spin this as anything other than a cold-blooded attack on a major civilian center.

Slop is his new nickname.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says people should move beyond calling AI 'slop'

"We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication and develop a new equilibrium ... that accounts for humans being equipped with these new cognitive amplifier tools as we relate to each other"

When privacy law demands, for instance, that students' data cannot be held on out-of-country servers, universities do not find it hard to avoid entering into contracts with tech companies that cannot abide by these conditions. Or to pressure them into making significant changes to their products.
The whole university sector could come out and say that AI is too dangerous, too unreliable and too costly and they will have nothing to do with it. Ethical educational leadership.

One of the chief virtues of the book is that it’s nearly the only remaining form of media that isn’t constantly being interrupted by ads. Between the covers is the last place on earth where no one is trying to sell you shit, a place where you can still be a human being rather than a mark.
