Read the whole thread, fascinating and bad :(
We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

A little boy just walked by, with bare feet, mud up his legs, a fishing rod and a sizeable fish in his hand? In Te Atatū? Is this ... wholesome???

A horrendous report on ABC radio from a Brisbane doctor doing a second tour in Gaza with Medecins sans Frontières. She says the ceasefire is in name only, the genocide continues and the deprivation of basic food, shelter and resources means even the injured haven’t what the need to heal.

The government of bad ideas :(
I looked into importing gas (LNG) as a solution to our energy woes, and almost no one except the domestic gas industry thinks it’s a good idea.

So why why is a “last-resort” fuel suddenly the centrepiece of our energy plan?

The fuel of ‘last resort’: How imported gas became New Zealand’s first choice
It's expensive, vulnerable to price shocks and terrible for the planet. So why are we importing gas?

We already have the technology to slow (& ideally reverse) climate change. We don’t need to sit around with our fingers crossed waiting for the tech bros. We just NEED TO DO IT. Electrify everything. Build already-consented solar & wind renewable farms. Stop subsidising fossil fuel. No more coal.

Hey the Nazis did this to my grandparents so this sounds cool @teamlabouruk.bsky.social
The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Affordability politics is also environmental politics. They work hand-in-hand. The cost of living is a core Green issue 💚
Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)!
To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.

That means that if we'd followed the 2023 policy track, we could have avoided over $1 billion in offshore mitigation to meet New Zealand's 2030 Paris Agreement NDC (>20Mt at say ~$NZ50/t). /ends

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

I must prove to them that their own inner voice — the one we’re honing all semester — is more trustworthy than AI.

It’s a project of connecting students w/ their own humanity. Building & trusting their own muscles to run & dance when hopping in the AI golf cart seems not just easier, but *smarter.*

To me, this is one of the key aspects of generative AI's broader environmental, social and climate harm: it cannot exist in an efficient, lean and narrowly applied way.

It only ever looks like it "works" when it's brute-forced: just like Bitcoin. The harm is baked into its characteristics.
Artificial Intelligence Wants to Sell You Stuff While the World Burns
Meta is betting on generative AI for a new generation of aggressive advertising. It requires immense energy, much of which will likely come from fossil fuels.

This!!!
At what point do we publicly accept that NZ is deeply corrupt and the only reason why we don’t have a culture of direct payoffs and bribery (that we cite as the evidence for us not being corrupt) is because it’s not needed? The boys club gets what it wants through people playing their social roles.

And their attitude - smash stuff under urgency, because we won't be in charge anymore - just highlights the need for an #OmnibusRepealBill to undo the damage.

Nothing this illegitimate regime has done can be allowed to stand. Revert it all on day one.
