At the Whittier Tunnel (east of Anchorage), it is -21F with calm winds on the Portage side and +1F with 25 mph winds from the SW on the Whittier side - just 2.5 miles away. Cold air that pools over Portage Lake "spills" over Portage Pass and accelerates down to the roadway.

🚨🚨🚨 The global average temperature in 2025 was the 3rd highest on record. The last three years are in a class by themselves. Instead of focusing on changes in aerosols, volcanic eruptions, or other transient events, focus on the on big thing we have been doing globally for 250 years. 🚨🚨🚨

Some December monthly average temps around Anchorage:

Anchorage Intl AP: 13.5F
Lake Hood Seaplane: 12.6F
Merrill Field: 8.9F
My house in east Anchorage: 6.3F

The differences are almost completely related to wind.

Think Elmore Rd - not Midtown The criteria for our zone is an apparent temp (thermometer temp or wind chill) of -25F. @alaskawx.bsky.social

2025 Precipitation was exactly in the middle of the long-term average for the Contiguous U.S. as a whole. However, there were a few areas with record precipitation, and record lack of precipitation. 🌧️🌵

🚨🚨🚨 2025 finished in the top 10 for warmest year on record in the Contiguous U.S. (1895-present). For most of the areas from the Rocky Mountains westward, it was a top 5 warmest year. No areas had a historically cool year.
