The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there
agree with this (hah) but also think a particular mistake the left made for a long time online, and still makes to an extent, is failing to understand that the person whose mind you may actually change is the one reading the argument you're having, not the one you're arguing with
The secret to engaging in social media debate is knowing you will never win anyone over. The best you can hope for is to have people who already agree with tell you you're awesome. You might great a dopamine thrill from the righteousness of your anger! Fine benefits, all. But you will never win.

The regime seriously damaged the 2020 census in ways that certainly suppressed counts of targeted groups. Census 2030 seems likely to be much worse. How can we any longer rely on the census for reapportionment? Not to mention the hundreds of other things for which we rely on an accurate census.

And if you’re wondering “Why is there a blob in the back?” Well, that’s where the first woman president was supposed to go. More than a century later, it remains unsculpted.

It's the Jesus definition and not the NextDoor definition. MN Decency.
This is a subtle point but I’ll try it out as a “yes, and”: What Minnesota (not just Minneapolis) showed us is even bigger than “love your neighbor,” because in Minnesota, “neighbor” is a more expansive category than proximity. It’s anyone who needs help.
My theory of the moment: The extraordinary courage of ordinary people in places like Minneapolis is reawakening us to our social and economic ties to immigrants. It's making "love thy neighbor" cool again. That's the ultimate antidote to MAGA hate.

Get to know your neighbors.

I know society doesn’t make this easy, but it’s really important.

A lot of mutual aid work relies on trust and vetting.

If you don’t have any neighbors who can vouch for you, you may not be able to join hyperlocal efforts.

So… get to know your neighbors.

Dan O'Sullivan, welcome to Life After Cars.
My car's catalytic converter got stolen last week so I've been without a car & have been walking/using public transit. Unfortunately, this has solved 90% of the problems in my life with its social and mental health benefits, while adding the slight problem of realizing motorists now want to kill me.

This is how to do it. 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽
Swiss Olympic bobsled commentator broke a century of neutrality and spent the entire run of the Israeli bobsled team recounting all the pro-genocide remarks and social media posts by Adam Edelman, one of the apartheid state athletes.

Absolute legend. More of this in sports please!

I've lied to you and I'm sorry. First, I said on Saturday I wasn't going to re-up this anymore. But I have to because I also lied to you about the closing date of the comment period!!

Comments accepted through 5pm on Tuesday, February 17th!!

My sincere apologies. I will do better next time.
🧵With ongoing hostile occupation by paramilitary thugs under oath to the Mad King, I've hesitated to note what now feels like a parochial topic. Met Council recently opened a public comment period on processes to award ~$300mil in transpo funding this year.

Today we celebrate George Washington’s Birthday. Who should be remembered as having owned more than 300 slaves and for his extensive land speculation on stolen Indigenous lands. But also who, as a General, had one of his officers executed for mutiny, sedition and treachery.

I do think there’s a certain type of Democrat that realizes it’s possible we are dealing with a perfect storm where almost any Democrat will win, and are terrified we might nominate radical candidates who will actually engage in needed change instead of status quo corporate centrist bullshit.
One of the interesting things this time around is just how hollow the whole thing sounds. In the past, people have been able to use the empty concept of electability to anoint and position the person they demanded, but now that Republicans are getting obliterated everywhere, that doesn't work.
If I were a Democrat concerned about winning elections and was hearing that a significant number of voters wouldn’t support Gavin Newsom in 2028, I would simply stop pushing Gavin Newsom in 2026.

Being a billionaire is peak anti-social behavior
I’m quite serious when I say we should start being bigoted to billionaires like society has historically been to racial minorities and women.

Non-Minnesotans, be clear on this: the *one and only* thing they do is racial profiling. The *only* thing. Ask anyone here! If you look nonwhite, Latino particularly, ICE will target you. It’s really as simple as that
Homan: "When they say 'stop racial profiling' -- that's just not occurring. ICE will briefly detain and question somebody based on reasonable suspicion. It has nothing to do with racial profiling."

For Trumpers, rule of law means Trump is law and he will rule over you with a violent, constitutional rights obliterating crackdown if you live in a place that didn't vote for him.
Almost spit out my coffee reading this. (To be fair, the story details the ways the GOP violated the rule of law. And Annette Meeks should be ashamed of herself.) www.startribune.com/as-ice-surge... (gift link)
