just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now
Our government is murdering the citizens of this country. They are doing it without any checks on their violence

The funny thing about this standard MAGA response to protest is that in this case not only is it once again a lie, but the people they’re protesting — immigration officers — are literally paid agitators and chaos agents from out of state.
Emmer: "The people you're seeing in these videos, the vast majority of them I do not believe are from Minnesota. These are organized chaos agents, paid agitators. The vast majority of Minnesotans that are talking to me appreciate that law enforcement has arrived, and they are happy they're there."

All jobs are just types of prostitution
Employment is just a social experiment to see how much nonsense a person can absorb politely.

It illustrates people like Schumer’s worst political instinct: the belief that they can only respond to public opinion and not shape it, and with that the fear that somehow things will shift and then there will be a backlash because they refused to support annexation. It’s absurd.
The incredibly lukewarm Democratic response on Greenland is being noticed in Europe, incidentally.

Chuck Schumer not finding a stronger word than “quixotic” for Trump’s plan to seize Greenland has been name checked to me more than once.
But Americans who want to save the alliance with Europe must have no illusions about how bad a condition this transatlantic partnership is in.

Minnesota's citizens are showing that this country is too big, too decent, too democratic and too free in some deep sense for Trumpism to control it all. Trumpists are throwing massive amounts of money and resources into ICE. It's not enough. Thank you, Minnesota. Thank you America. Keep fighting.

i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

Here’s another one: i feel like infinite crackdowns for the public vs total impunity for the super-rich - demonstrated in possibly the most stark way imaginable - may tell us a lot about why things are the way they are.

the reason there are going to be more incidents like this is that you’ve hired a bunch of murderers and told them they’ll be protected and celebrated if they shoot people
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."

really aggravating that the NYT has a huge pack of the best journalists on the planet, and then nearly all of the key decisions regarding attention, framing, and overall coverage are driven by a crypto right wing nepo baby and a dozen-ish of his toadies

the dangerous niche I see NYT playing is as de facto news feed for people who don't do social media. i know quite a few folks actually who subscribe and scroll their NYT app rather than wade into the socials. these people are prone to frown and say things like "well sure hope zohran can deliver"

Every wildest fear at the time of the Department of Homeland Security's creation has been realized or at least stated as a public mission. The organization was born rotten and has only grown worse; dismantling it is the gentlest possible fate and the future of democracy likely requires more.

Never underestimate the appeal of status
People lining up to celebrate MTG or other GOP castoffs despite the damage they’ve done to vulnerable groups and democracy just shows how much they desperately only want their lives to remain the same and are more than fine sacrificing anyone and everything to get there.

I saw a chart about commitment to AI, and unsurprisingly the US was far in the lead, and it really drove home an key emotion driving the grift.

The *idea* of the U.S. as number one is so powerful that we have effectively made up a category we can be number one in, and it MUST BE TRUE.

Polling: "Do you think the rich have too much political power in the U.S.?"

Yes: 80%
No: 8%

Independent voters are 81%/6% on this; even Trump voters are 68%/18%.

Maybe a political party could lead on this issue.

Xmas reminder: If GOP didn’t give 800 billionaires a $2T tax cut (again)—we’d have enough for SNAP & to cancel medical & student debt.

GOP sold out 200M Americans for 800 billionaires.

This is what class war on working people looks like. Stop bootlicking billionaires. Tax them out of existence.

1) genuine life changing moment of my early 20s was realizing I actually didn't have to do this at all. tell the youths

2) I feel like there's a class discussion to be had around the stakes of this kind of decision though
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

The news is not just what’s reported, it’s also what isn’t reported
Breaking character: I am open to the idea the media's coverage of Biden's age and mental acuity was fair or perhaps not even tough enough. But the fact that it was so much tougher than the coverage of Trump's (more severe) mental decline is damning and I can't see how anyone could argue otherwise.
NYT isn’t worth reading because they are in the bag for Trump

“Crime” is not a moral issue; it is a bureaucratic term of art that means “against the law.” Anything could be against the law. Staking out an anti-crime position is not the same thing as being wise or just or thoughtful, it’s hall monitor cosplay

To paraphrase a great insight I ran across: if you believe dem electeds are all automatically “your team,” and what’s bad for the team is bad for you, then criticizing dem electeds actually hurts YOU so you need to be quiet for your own good, no matter how much contempt they consistently show you
"sympathy for some of the GOP's voters but contempt for their elected and appointed leaders" is the proper position for dem electeds, and instead we get "sympathy for GOP elected and appointed leaders, but contempt for ~Dem~ voters" it's truly insane fuck all these assholes
