This reminds me of the chapter in Let This Radicalize You entitled “Don’t Pedestal Organizers”

Yah well put! It goes to show that just as important as defining something as a competition is establishing the terms of that competition, since the word can be accurately applied to both insignificant and significant contests

You are of course correct. I don’t think nfl or any other league is actually communist lol. Just wanted to suggest that the word “competition” in any context is probably still sports-flavored for a lot of ppl

You really want a ton of ppl in the streets but you also really want a little ideological discipline, giving up on either one seems like too big of a concession imo. There is no role model for the world we want if it’s never existed before, our imaginations/educations/decencies are our only guides

Good point. Perhaps even more directly, all teams’ points in all sports are reset to zero at the beginning of every game, and we still manage to think of sports as competition. Capitalists would say that good teams are being punished for their success haha

I bet folks hear “competition” and they think “NFL” and how even the strongest teams don’t dominate forever, not acknowledging the NFL is basically a planned economy specifically because that’s more fair than just letting Jerry Jones or whoever buy the best players, ruining the sport

I read something suggesting that expectations for D and R highly correspond to gender expectations, i.e. Rs are allowed to be angry, violent, incompetent, entitled (like het men) but Ds have to coddle Rs *and* R base and get called out if they don’t and then also don’t get any credit if they do

I’d suggest that perhaps not that many dem electeds are actually “on our team” but I wouldn’t want to hurt the team 😳

I recently finished “Let This Radicalize You,” and enjoyed the chapter called “don’t pedestal organizers,” which helps put huge disappointments like this into perspective
