In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

This book Kickstarter has three days left and needs a handful more backers for full funding. I think anyone with nostalgia for the early days of home computing should pledge so, uh, I can get a copy too.

My master’s in library and information science taught me the fantastical dimensions of my own ignorance.
a lot of the problem with the Nates and Matts is that they didn't go to grad school. I don't think going ensures you aren't a blowhard knowitall, but it does make you understand that people have been working on shit for a long time and you can't just brush up in 3 hours because you are a special boy
As someone who spent ten years in grad school (and did defend + graduate) I’m always so weirded out by people who think being smart about one thing makes them smart about everything when what being highly educated did to me was saddle me with the crushing certainty that I’m not smart about anything

My newest piece for Liberal Currents, and a paean to public health. It needs to be the tip of the spear against fascism and it’s a natural leader in the fight for a better world.

Thanks to @gregggonsalves.bsky.social for talking to me as I worked on this.

Reality gets the last word, and you can't negotiate with Death. THIS VEXES THE ULTRA WEALTHY! They can't imagine a force that won't obey them, and they can't accept that the world will continue their absence, indifferent to their wishes. Mortality is an insult to their authority. How very dare it!
A friend and I talk a lot about how the beauty of money (small m) is that it allows you to buy your way out of problems. Car broke down? You can afford to fix it.

But it seems with very rich people, the inability for money to "fix" a situation - like mortality - to their liking is THE problem.

Jimmy Carter's advice to a young person.

My nephew Matthew shared this letter with me yesterday. Five years ago, he wrote to all the living presidents and asked for advice on how to participate in public service. Only Jimmy Carter responded. A precis on how to live a life of service.

The truly maddening thing is that, unlike when I was a young man in science and the materials and engineering just weren’t there yet, the future is *right there.* The problem is *solved*. What’s holding us back is not just greed, but this bizarre nostalgia, an obsession with petro- masculinity.

And oh god, I can tell it’s not even gold foil. They’re color-printer pages, and it was originally a single line of text with a left-to-right gradient from light yellow to dark yellow and back to light yellow. They couldn’t fit all three pages in one row on that wall. This is so hamfisted and cheap.

This is devastating: TV has been a really useful source of truth and journalism that reaches people. It looks as though they’re gutting it.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.
