Bunch of new followers recently, so here’s a quick rundown of stuff I work on:

I WROTE A BOOK. It’s about isolation and madness and our desperate need for human connection. You can buy it. I also read the audiobook and venture to say I do it very well torpublishinggroup.com/your-shadow-...

I think there are two things people need to know bc they're different from most platforms

1. There's not just one feed running an opaque algorithm, you can choose (and have more than one)

2. *Everything is public* even if you can't see it on this app

I REPEAT: EVERYTHING YOU DO HERE IS PUBLIC
It's always so funny and dumb when people start doing the "this is BlueSky, and we do things a bit different around here! Here's my itemized 20 point list of instructions!" posts, because if that's what BlueSky was actually like, you wouldn't *need* to be telling people to do that stuff, would you?
remember when we all tried to migrate to mastodon that one time and then the people there were really preachy and hostile to us? that's some of you here right now

If you are civilly sued for a stupid-ass reason by someone you have made mad on the internet, such as a BS defamation suit, the insurance policy will pay your lawyers to defend you against it. It's especially important if you live in a state without a good anti-SLAPP law.

Reposting out of a response thread to remind US people: if you make people mad on the internet, it is a VERY worthwhile investment to add an umbrella policy to your homeowners' or renters' insurance. I recommend a $2m per incident minimum; we increased ours to $5m recently just in case.
This is part of why I *strongly* recommend anyone who makes assholes on the internet mad a lot should have a umbrella liability policy added to their homeowners' or renters' insurance, with a minimum coverage of $2m per incident, although we just increased ours to $5m just in case.

This is related to the idea that if white people don't have 100% of high-prestige jobs, awards, recognition etc it's evidence of discrimination against whiteness. It's where "great replacement" logic leads you. bsky.app/profile/donm...
I see this on the right - the idea that the existence of foreign academic staff and faculty are evidence of discrimination against natives. It's not discrimination, its selection: academia is a global marketplace, the US is the biggest center of that market. So yes, some foreign talent will win.
Striking nativist editorializing by the federal judge who just upheld the $100,000 tax on high-skill immigrants.

She opines that it’s “troubling” that universities hire talent from abroad at all, instead of only native grads.

Then admits (!) that opinion is irrelevant (So why write it? Venting?)

We need to do a lot, and I mean a lot, to severely stigmatize the alt health movement that led to MAHA.
For @rollingstone.com I wrote about the mass national movement to ban chemtrails...which don't exist. The movement is one of the ways in which MAHA is taking over the country.

She was fired for teaching what she was hired to teach. She was fired for doing what she did not do. She was fired for breaking a law that does not exist.
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.

A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

true. that's bc you've allowed your sense of style to be narrowly defined by fashion brands, instead of thinking about it in terms of cultural history. over the course of the 20th century, many groups have dressed well, even if they didn't conform to fashion trends or bourgeois respectability

Anyway, it’s okay to say AI was a mistake. If AI people didn’t want everything to be lumped in with the nonsense LLMs are forcing onto society, they had a decade to draw that distinction and never bothered to. Now the branding is stuck, sorry guys you have to have ideas now not just sneers.

Like, young people don’t know what file trees are because their tech has trained them to rely on searching instead of organizing. Now that same search function, having attacked organization, is now attacking comprehension while degrading sharply in quality and accuracy. Everything is decaying.

Hot take: kids not knowing what a file system is AND kids misusing LLMs as a search engine are two sides of the same technology incompetence problem this thread is criticizing.
kids who use ChatGPT today as a glorified search-engine frontend have no idea what these tools now/will someday make possible. they're scratching a still-expanding surface. (they also don't tend to know what, like, a 'filesystem' is, which is a separate huge problem.)

And that’s the problem: white supremacy relies on pretending not to exist. If white people are disproportionately successful, it must be inherent superiority and specialness. If they aren’t, it must be discrimination. The less marginalized they are on other axes, the more true this must be.

The fact is that to this day, the top earners in genre fiction (and everything else) are straight white men.

Sure, in most cases (Sanderson, Martin, King) they’re straight white men who established themselves a looooooooong time ago.

It’s harder to break in. For everyone. You’re not special.

This describes a solid 50% of all the writers I talked to at the library last year as writer-in-residence
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

If their genius is not recognized after they come to the convention with their manuscript in hand, surely it must be because they are white and male. Couldn't be anything else. They will go and tell people this was their experience at the convention. They were excluded. Tale as old as time.
