One of my kids drew this 11 years ago. I can’t refute it.

Autocorrect wasn’t *technically* wrong.

Oh yeah. That is nice.

With my pumpkin guitar.

Happy Halloween!
This year, I’m a guitarist.

I’d been encouraged to try drop-D tuning and never seen a reason to bother, but I got Joe Walsh’s “A Life of Illusion” stuck in my head this morning, and…huh. Okay. I get it.

GRETSCH. NO. WHY.

Honestly, it’s such a plain and ubiquitous thing, but it’s the first that I myself have owned and it seems magical.

Until this year, I didn’t know this kind of case is made of wood! Thin plywood, covered with vinyl and lined with padding and plush fabric. Guitar cases seemed like elemental objects when I was growing up, but now I’m learning what everything is made of. A wooden case is fitting for a wooden guitar.

I love the smell of Tolex in the evening.

Actually, no. Tolex is the textured vinyl sheeting that guitar cases like this are covered with. I’m mostly keeping the case in the basement until the odor wears off a bit. I’ve lived around many guitars and it is nostalgic, but it is also rather plasticky.

Am I inordinately pleased that my favorite capo for my electric guitar also works with my acoustic guitar? No, I am quite ordinately pleased.

I handed my Pacifica to my 70-year-old uncle who’s been playing since he was a teenager. He finger-strummed a few chords, wordlessly reached out for the pick I held out to him, and, with neither the slightest hesitation nor any expression on his face, proceeded to play the hell out of it.

I’m stunned at how *legitimate* the acoustic guitar looks in its hard case.

Like…wait, I have a Real Guitar?

This style of guitar is called a “dreadnought” because it’s friggin’ huge.

I took my acoustic guitar to Guitar Center on Friday and asked their technicians if they could make it easier to play. They lowered the action and replaced the stock phosphor bronze strings with lighter, lower-tension Martin MA130S Silk & Steels.

This is now a *radically* more comfortable guitar.

What I’m saying is that if someone cites literature to support a perspective, they (or their interviewer) should make sure they didn’t hallucinate the text.

Whenever I see one of these vans, I imagine them delivering emergency batteries for TV remotes that have stopped working. A small, perhaps, but invaluable service.

Five years ago today, I found out that someone I dearly loved had died of long covid. It tore me apart, and I’ve tried to reassemble myself in a way that she would think of as a better version of me.

There’s more than one of these.
