You think Dem voters would have turned out in the numbers, and with the enthusiasm, they did JUST FIVE DAYS AGO if they thought the party was going cave like this? Jesus

Imagine possessing both the arrogance and incompetence of Dick Durbin.

We understand how the Senate works, dude. That's the fucking problem.
Durbin said critics of his vote “need to understand how the Senate works”

Monarez is playing her weak hand perfectly, and should be a model for institutional resistance for the next four years:
1. Make them fire you
2. Don’t go along to get along
3. Don’t apologize, have confidence in your own integrity and the importance of your role
4. Always escalate the conflict

I have found a lot of use for Melinda Cooper’s concept of the anti-social state: a government that exists only to extract wealth and inflict violence, and dismantles all its pro-social and life-enabling functions. www.dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

A wild story, new in @boltsmag.org:

In a city of 250K people that Harris and Biden both won, Democrats not only failed to run a candidate for sheriff but are now enthusiastically endorsing “Detain ‘Em Dave Rosado,” who just last month signed a contract with ICE.

The Republican appointees of the Supreme Court allowed this to happen.

My June 23 headline: “SCOTUS allows Trump admin to deport people to random countries with no notice.” www.lawdork.com/p/breaking-s...
Breaking news: Federal immigration officers may deport immigrants with as little as six hours’ notice to countries other than their own, even without assurances that the arrivals will be safe from persecution or torture, a top official said.
ICE memo outlines plan to deport migrants to countries where they are not citizens
The dramatic shift in policy could result in thousands of immigrants being deported to places where they lack family ties or even a common language.

NEW from me: The GOP megabill will add $171 billion to immigration enforcement and ICE, a gigantic sum that'll pour funds into a vast network of detention + hire thousands of ICE agents and fund sheriffs.

I talked to an expert on just what to expect:

How the GOP Megabill Would Turbocharge Local Immigration Enforcement - Bolts
Congress is poised to pour tens of billions of dollars into more immigration detention, private jails, and border operations, plus new ICE partnerships with local police and sheriffs.

it's imo rhetorically useful that perhaps the most famously liberal metro area in the United States is now the beating heart of a strain of drugged-out sex freak technofascism which is a junior partner in the federal government

okay so my general position is "if you think about blood boy and bryan johnson more than a minute or two it goes from funny to depressing"

but i think imma change that from a minute or two to immediately becomes sad

Just a reminder that Judge Xinis's original order requiring the government to bring Abrego Garcia back to the United States was in effect for more than 72 hours before it was administratively stayed by Chief Justice Roberts on Monday.

What did the Justice Department ... do ... during that time?
BREAKING: DOJ files a response, nearly 50 minutes past the deadline, saying they are "unable to provide" any of the information Judge Xinis ordered.

"Defendants are not in a position where they 'can' share any information requested by the Court. That is the reality."

people always forget but ICE is barely more than 20 years old, it was created in 2003 as part of DHS after 9/11

obviously most of its functions existed in other agencies beforehand but putting it all together has been an unmitigated disaster
Fairly undeniable at this point that abolish ICE was always the only reasonable position

look, i think the paramilitary unit with police powers that is staffed with the most racist people alive and was created in post-9/11 hysteria to be outside the DOJ and report directly to the president might be bad
I genuinely don't understand how anyone can look at the current moment and think "Abolish ICE" was anything but completely correct.

ICE cannot and should not exist. Period.

You fax from your computer.

You fill out a cover page form & since I didn't have attachments, I just wrote what I wanted to say on the cover page.

You get an email asking you to confirm; you confirm.

When it's successfully sent, you get another email.

Easy peasy!

if the project of legacy news organizations was explicitly to frame Trump's actions as being as acceptable-as-possible without going so far that they alienate their overwhelmingly liberal readership how would it look different exactly
The countless small choices made every day inside newsrooms to do things like describe clear violations of the black-letter text of the law as "legally murky" add up to a very meaningful part of what's happened since 2017 and will continue to happen for the next four years.
Trump fires at least 12 inspectors general overnight in legally murky move
A senior administration official said the move was an effort to let go of parts of the Biden administration that don’t “align” with the Trump administration.

Ah yes, the fundamental error of the Dem mind: assuming that the public is somehow directly observing politics, and that the Democratic role is to react to the public's reaction, rather than help SHAPE the public's reaction
i think dems are waiting to see what the public's reaction is to the promises not being kept. i agree it's risky, but it's also risky right now to act like an outraged lib because there is a sense where when we act like that we're doing what far right media wants us to do.
