Your occasional reminder, if you’re in the UK, that it is shaping up to be a hideous bird flu season, with many wildlife casualties (including resident birds, not just winter migrants), and, however soft your heart, it is a Really Bad Idea to handle sick or ‘injured’ birds or bring them inside.

@squidlingking.bsky.social strong reason to go to Lübeck on our trip
Not sure about *most* demonic, but the cutest demon decoration I've seen was a statue of the devil just outside the Marienkirche in Lübeck, on a column said to have been thrown down by him. Here's a photo of me with the statue from 20 years ago when we visited. (The devil is the one on the left.)

A friend of a friend, named Melanie, wore the same jeans all the time as a teen. My friend's dad nicknamed her "Unchanged Melanie", in a nod to the Righteous Brothers classic, Unchained Melody.

She's like a black hole of shame. She is shame collapsed in on itself so that no shame escapes. Liz Truss shame attracts shame from everyone within her gravitational field. She sucks the shame of the entire Tory Party down into the well of her own emptiness.

between this and the FSO Safer (another ship at serious risk of exploding) I’m convinced every field has its “yeah, this is the problem that keeps me up at night” and I’m on a quest to learn about all of them
yes yes we all know about the Edmund Fitzgerald, rest her soul, but did you know about the ship laden with explosives that sank in the mouth of the Thames in 1944 and could explode at any minute and which attempts to disarm keep failing

The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.
