The self-congratulatory tone of this press conference is astonishing. Law enforcement misidentified the initial suspect—again—then allowed the actual perpetrator to be completely in the wind for 48 hours, during which time he went on to kill again

I met Barack Obama in 2007 at a small event when his run for president was just starting. He asked me what I was working on. I said, a book about the 5 1967 Best Picture nominees. He said, quickly, "So...Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, In the Heat of the Night..." >

"Congratulations to President Kennedy...."

God. The soulless, ignorant, self-absorbed shitpieces who have been gathered together to govern a once-serious nation.
Serious question - does she know Kennedy is dead?

I always understood the Kennedy Center to be a monument to President Kennedy. Will a bust of Trump be placed next to Kennedy in the large hall? Are we now at the stage where Trump just changes the names of other monuments in DC like the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument?

I think Asha Rangappa is right — they are lining up the external and internal enemies. Or trying to. This is very risky and will almost certainly blow up in their faces.
I keep saying this but no one is connecting the dots. The war is to satisfy legal preconditions for mass removal *domestically* of Latinos (i.e., suddenly a lot of people are going to be “Venezuelan” for purposes of removal). This is 100% Stephen Miller…oil claim is to make grandpa go along
There is no national security logic that would impel the US to want to do regime change in Venezuela. It's simply not that important. I'm not even sure wag the dog is the right metaphor for what's happening here. Seems like an insane misallocation of US national security assets and attention.

Much better project to get people to understand that “Make America Great Again” has as its fundamental premise that America is bad.

the tea party was really a seminal shift in how the median congressperson behaved in person

you stopped needing to be a successful schmoozer and started needing to be a totally unreasonable lunatic to win your primaries, and social media has only accelerated this
My theory that as members of congress are increasingly batshit it will increasingly select for even more batshit people who can tolerate the job is doing pretty well
Congressional retirements at a historic pace in both chambers. Per @ballotpedia.org , 50 Members have now announced. ballotpedia.org/List_of_U.S.... I gather it’s a miserable era to be in Congress for many incumbents.

The thing about this specific claim, from Wagner, is that...... I dunno man, "America Bad" is never going to be the official position of the United States federal government?????
anyway, you can playact at being a radical by defending the prerogatives of the most powerful man on earth, a pedophile billionaire, or you can take the word of the fucking author herself.

This Kennedy Center shit is unacceptable, and whichever Democrats running for president swear to undo it (presuming it goes through, and I presume it will), plus immediately tear down the ballroom, go to the top of my list.

(Plus promising to seek prosecution for the entire administration.)

When Bush wanted to privatize social security, to offer a cheap simulacrum of the thing, a faux program that was more properly an anti-program, our answer was that we wanted the program we already had. We don’t need to be purely reactionary and act like their wanting to destroy means we do too.
So. There's an element of truth here; the (shoddy) aestheticisation of politics is a feature of fascism, and Trump's gold-plated turduckens are emblematic of this tendency.

But I refuse to grant that any of this is anything like a "vision of the future."
yeah eat it bsky: wagner is right.

Again, I really wish more papers would get accustomed to the form “Trump unlawfully pretends to…” when describing things Trump says he’s doing but has no legal power to do.
Like renaming the Defense Department the "War Department," the name of the Kennedy Center has not been legally changed, because Congress has not changed it-->

Its also like not that really. The American left has a bad habit of plastering their sentiments towards the US onto others. The United States is broadly popular internationally.

A third of 16-18 year olds girls say in surveys that they experienced unwanted sexual touching at school. There are several hundred rapes reported in schools every year.
Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

The White House claims the vote to rename the Kennedy Center was “unanimous.” That is false. I was muted on the call and denied the opportunity to speak or register my opposition. That is not consensus. That is censorship.

This is extraordinary, heartbreaking, and a red alert warning sign for our democracy.

These people are about to be federal judges, and they refuse to answer whether the U.S. Capitol was attacked on January 6.

They say they can't comment because it's "a political controversy".
Sen. BLUMENTHAL: Was the U.S. Capitol attacked on January 6, 2021?

Trump nominee: *dodges*

Trump nominee: *dodges*

Trump nominee: Well, individuals entered the Capitol.

Blumenthal: You are in fear—how will you have the courage to be fair and impartial?
