in a certain abstract sense, this is the most boring political story, one that would be equally understandable in 1880 or 1980 -- a backbencher revolt against an unpopular, lame duck president who doesn't want to relinquish power

but it's playing out via death threats and pedo conspiracies

"gender critical" beliefs make people insane.
Even in conversations about saving the planet from catastrophic destruction, regressive anti-trans voices are trying to derail things by demanding climate agencies collect data about 'biological sex' rather than gender 📊🌍

Advocates say conservative states’ push to define gender as ‘biological sex’ would backslide on decade-old language within the UN

the core problems with sports gambling legalization are the ones that have always attended it

-the inherently predatory power law structure of the house's profits
-the denaturing effect of large gambling concerns on sporting competition

but this one is new and bad in its own way

the combination of unregulated sports gambling and social media is its own peculiarly bad thing
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

I have thought about this a lot. If you can find community based on the most repulsive part of yourself and also face exile from that community if you fix it, that’s what many psychologists would call “not good “

I'd guess that 85-90% of American scientists would be ineligible for future funding under this law, maybe close to 100% in the R1 universities. So much for funding proposals based on scientific merit.

Apart from being sinophobes, the people pushing this have no clue how science or higher ed works.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

I really wonder how much people are running with the Bill Clinton thing because it's funny and how much they're trying to protect themselves from the psychic damage of it being something magnitudes worse.

[Assuming it wasn't entirely a joke in the first place, as is likely.]
