Scalded by negative reviews for their first "Hanukkah" movie ("Who Is the Secret Jew Among Us at Christmas?"), Hallmark responded by making a movie that is the MOST Jewish. Naturally, @davidjroth.bsky.social and I made @mauraquint.bsky.social, @ugarles.bsky.social and @andylevy.net watch it with us.
A magical matchmaker who looks like Lady Moff Tarkin brings together coastal deli dynasties with the help of Lisa Loeb and a doorman so two cloned Bubbes can fight over potatoes in an almost anthropologically Jewish Hallmark movie.

One time in college a bunch of us were staying at somebody’s dad’s cabin and we came back from a hike to find the door standing open, and one guy insisted on charging in ahead of us and pried a decorative spear (idk) off the wall and then went through every room shouting “CLEAR” like he was in COD

I'm a county-level prosecutor. It's spectacularly difficult to sway ZERO grand jurors to your position. I'm not typically one to dunk on fellow attorneys, but this is some "sobbing toddler watches their balloon drift into the clouds" level of legal skill. I'm absolutely fascinated by this.

I’ve never felt unsafe in this bougie neighborhood a day in my life. This is a 25 mph zone, full of fancy bars and restaurants, a curling club, salons, boutiques, and one of the busiest coffee shops around. They are doing their damndest to wreck everything here.
This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

lingering substackers: it costs me $81 a month to not be on substack, not much to overcome
I do not shame anyone who's still on Substack and I am still impatient with Patreon's newsletter features but here's a good reminder of why so many of us are putting up with the various difficulties of *not* using Substack

if the dow's over 50,000, you're over 18, that's just how the market works
Bondi crashes out over Epstein: "The Dow is over 50,000 dollars! I don't know why you're laughing. You're a great stock trader as I hear, Raskin. The Dow is over 50,000 right now. The S&P at almost 7,000, and the Nasdaq smashing records. That's what we should be talking about."

tbh nobody should be asking leftists if they'll support newsom and leftists should mostly brush off the question. it's a divisive trap that serves *only* newsom's personal interests. he isn't the candidate, he's a shithead and nominating him would be a bad idea. useless hypothetical.

The economy produced roughly the same number of jobs in Joe Biden’s last full month in office as it produced in Donald Trump’s first full year in office.
Kind of wild that this jobs report is being framed so positively when it also says this “the annual benchmark revisions sharply lowered estimates for job growth in earlier months. The new estimates show that the U.S. economy added just 181,000 jobs in 2025, down from the earlier estimate of 584,000”

Reading people's struggles with math is reminding me of a few years ago when I suddenly realized I couldn't remember what factoring was or how it worked or fit into math or applications in general, even though it was a part of math I really liked. It was just something I'd memorized, until I didn't.

I did not have to talk about Madea, but I *did* just get to talk about Failure to Launch, which is in many ways an ancestral fully-demented Hallmark movie. So I'm excited about that.

Excited to watch the footman at the Berghof thread the needle Bush just missed. Luckily, tone policing, not having any money and having your most influential fan be the Times carries a lot of weight here.
Chris Rufo doesn't have a career outside of being a "culture warrior." This is his movement. He made his bed. Now he gets to lie in it.

Police in Bloomington, MN just announced that one of the guys they arrested in an underage sex trafficking sting was a **background checker for ICE agents.**

He had a high security clearance in the Trump administration... and he was caught trying to abuse children. Sickening.

my favorite ben smith story: meeting with him at buzzfeed and him complaining about how PC all of his employees were and how much it pissed him off, then having me say "but what in particular about that bothers you" and...silence.

Wait...the Ben Smith? The unethical media reporter who reports on his own investments without disclosure? Wormy guy?
Ben Smith isn't a good writer or particularly politically bright, and this piece (that floats over or omits historic corruption, irreparable institutional damage and concentration camp racism) is yet another lovely example.

Rudy was the last shooter of the inefficient long-two. The NBA game kind of passed him by, feel like ten years earlier he might have been a real star.
always so funny to me when people are like “how am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. “why did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay
