This will be a thread of the most widely read essays we've published since the 2024 election, by author. Hopefully this will give you a good view into the kind of publication we're asking you to support. gofund.me/9779a6cb8

I’ve seen a worrying number of readers angry when a book is not exactly what they expected, which is a way to trap yourself permanently.

The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

I encountered these in Tucson, on and adjacent to the U of A campus, and they seemed clunky but serviceable, and of course infinitely preferable to a full-sized sedan that it would be replacing.

We finally have Ethical Burrito Taxi Under Capitalism and these fools can't see it.
Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

The leftism we need: automation is awesome as it eliminates human drudgery.

The leftism we have: human drudgery must be preserved to protect the system by which people sell their labor for sustenance.
Marx cheered industrialization and the elimination of human drudgery as he thought it hastened the day of revolution.

Some modern day leftists fear it instead because they can't imagine a world where people's livelihoods didn't depend on selling their labor.

I'm flummoxed by the underground movement to rehab cancelled figures. There's a rumor that a studio head is planning to begin bringing cancelled people back. It's bananas. The industry has contracted, leaving writers, directors and actors scrambling for work and we're making space for sex criminals?

What's often missed about early mass surveillance (e.g. Germany + Berlin during the cold war) is that the wiretaps etc. were far less essential and successful than human informants and people who turned in family + neighbors.

This remains largely true of dragnet surveillance today.
New from 404 Media: a contractor is paying random people $300 to physically track immigrants for ICE. Spoke to people briefed on plans. This isn't licensed PIs/bounty hunters. These are just former police/military; members of public

So grateful to everyone in NYC who mobilized to stop the ICE raid of Canal St. The violence being committed against immigrants is heart-wrenching, but the shows of solidarity we have seen around the country give me so much hope.

it's interesting because right wingers won't shut up about triggering the libs, liberal tears, etc etc but on a deep level what they want isn't for us to be angry, what they want is for us to apologize and admit they were right all along
Like 30% of the country is absolutely enraged because they thought they were going to be able to be utter shitbirds without anyone being allowed to call them shitbirds, but here we are, calling them shitbirds.

And, just a side note, but disrupting the supply chain for addictive drugs does nothing to decrease demand. Addicts have run individual experiments on this countless times, trying to get sober by limiting their own access to their favorite drug. Ask a sober person if that worked for them.
The president is about to start a war for no real reason. All of the things he has blamed on the country he’s targeting — fentanyl distribution, “emptying the asylums” and sending patients to the U.S., alignment with Tren de Aragua— are provably, obviously false.

Lots of people are going to die.

The thread around this post is good and worth reading, and I think the thing is that given the distractions and stuff of today, I, a student of decades ago, would probably be performing like shit too.
This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.
