Emma might be my favorite Jane Austen book. You just want to be a bystander listening to all the wit, but there's also this perfect tension between high stakes and low, comedy and potential tragedy, longing and self-sufficiency. Also, it's gay.

Once again thinking about the editor who responded to a ms. with: "I wanted this to be more like [Bestselling Cozy Fantasy], but it wasn't, so I have to pass." No shade to that book, with its many shiny editions--I like it and get why it's popular. But we have to talk about uniformity in publishing.
