The problem with ICE is not that it's targeting people who aren't criminals. The problem with ICE is that it's an unaccountable secret deportation police. It cannot be reformed under a better president. It can be made less terrible, but the instrument of repression remains for the next tyrant.

Albertans are rapidly warming up to the idea of a provincial election. The UCP is way out in the weeds beyond what people wanted and expected. If Smith wants to lead a fascist/libertarian regime, she needs to put that to a vote. #ableg
Interesting article by Breakenridge. And what is really interesting is the comments: usually Herald comments are so pro-UCP it feels like propaganda, but in this case they are significantly against the UCP stance. Maybe change is in the winds. #ableg #abpoli

Breakenridge: If recalls, petitions too much for Smith, it can be simplified to an election
If recalls, petitions and referendums are too much for Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, it can all be simplified down to a general election.

"Public transit isn’t a luxury or a niche concern. It’s the backbone of a modern economy and a livable country. Carney still has time to change course to protect and strengthen the Canada Public Transit Fund and transit systems across the country, not leave them vulnerable to cuts."

People need food. Market won’t provide it. Government should. It’s literally the whole point.
Turns out Mamdani's controversial proposal for government-run supermarkets isn't so novel. Other cities also are toying with the idea to bring fresh, affordable food to communities that do not have easy access to it. Good WSJ read (gift link)

Today I’m introducing Motion 504: a cap on auto insurance rate increases, tying them to the consumer price index instead of letting it skyrocket out of control. We call on the UCP government to come to their senses and support this motion. #abpoli #ableg @albertandp.ca @naheednenshi.bsky.social

This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

IPV is one of the most common catalysts for reports and deportations.

And are usually used to control or interrupt happy circumstances.
I think we can safely say that the Leavitt's brother called ICE on his ex, the mother of his child, and I have to say: I have no desire to respect, find common ground or share the country with these monsters.

this is an aspect of "immigration enforcement" people don't really realize unless they've seen it because it's just too horrible to contemplate. abusers absolutely do use their partners/ex-partners' immigration status against them. the state gives them this power.

Seems like having that clause about suicide in the TOS is clear evidence that OpenAI knew that their product was capable of helping someone commit it… and yet they built no guard rails. Something something… rhymes with Noss Gregligence

This is called “chain refoulment” and it’s illegal under both U.S. and international law. And the State Department and ICE know very well what Ghana is doing and simply don’t care.
ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

But the rest of us need an austerity budget bc there isn’t enough money to go around :( :( :(
Corporate profits before taxes in Canada hit a new peak in the 3rd quarter, rising 7.6% from the 2nd quarter, StatCan reported yesterday. The previous pre-tax peak was in 2022 Q2. Telecomm profits jumped an extraordinary $10.4 billion but these were mostly one-time non-operational gains. #cdnecon

Gender-affirming care saves lives
1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.
Study In The Journal Of Pediatrics Finds Trans Youth Care Lowers Suicidality, Few Detransition
The groundbreaking study found that suicidality dropped for transgender youth receiving hormone therapy by nearly 70%, with only 7 patients of 432 discontinuing treatment.
