One of my many hypocritical beliefs is that when I make an End of History joke, it is funny and good, but when anyone else does, they are unfairly disrespecting a brilliant and prescient book and should die in a fire.
the funny thing is that everyone thought fukuyama was taking a victory lap when in reality he thought the end of history would stifle human creativity and make everyone bored and apathetic
My imp of the perverse gets so amused at the fact that people pooh-poohed Fukuyama after 9/11 or thereabouts and it's only recently that they actually realized he was right after actually, you know, thinking about his work critically

A smart Labour party would learn from this and just do the economically sensible thing of ignoring this shit and encouraging migration again. And yet
I'm near speechless at this framing of overall immigration falling by, like, 60%
Asylum seekers now make up nearly half of net migration to the UK and the number housed in hotels has increased despite Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to end their use ⬇️

I assume the architects who designed the Princes Street M&S are big Father Ted fans. Because the escalator to the first floor delivers you straight into the heart of the lingerie section (the second largest in Scotland I understand)

I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

"We grant people different rights based on their genetic heritage and on which scrap of land they happened to be born on. That’s mad, isn’t it?"

I just think, when debating immigration and so on, that we should try not to lose sight of the fact that "nationality" is a made up thing.
Why does nationality matter, anyway?
Deciding someone's legal rights based on a nebulous combination of birthplace and parentage is a bit weird

IT'S NOT A FAST TRACK IF YOU MAKE IT LONGER FOR EVERYONE ELSE TO SETTLE

Oh my God, abolish the Home Office
This is a very disingenuous post. NHS workers are not being fast-tracked, they’ve simply retained the five-year route to ILR that they were promised when they moved to this country. Treating people fairly is not a Labour “win.”

Is it possible to hate this government any more?

I have felt for quite a while that at least a part of anti-migrant, anti-refugee behaviour from successive governments is pulling the drawbridge up ahead of an increase in climate-caused refugee movement.

And you know what? It's not gonna save us, lads

I've seen this Muppets episode more than any other, I absolutely loved it as a kid. Just the idea that the Muppets could make a star out of anyone, even a messenger boy. Finding out why Langham had left The Thick Of It was a very sad day for me
As a policy, I now only talk to people who’ll get my references. It’s a bold decision. That’s how I know I can send contributor request emails that read “You’d be an unexpected guest star like Chris Langham in the Muppets” and know I’m going to be understood and work with likeminded individuals.

We need to push for the most "extreme" versions of things. No immigration rules *at all*, not even a passport check. No citizenship rules. You're here? You're British now.

Pre-War on Terror Tony Blair was a hell of a politician
I just revisited Tony Blair's 'forces of conservativism' conference speech in 1999 - two years into office. It's such a clear headed narration that balances people's continued frustration and what the government had delivered.

anyone who talks about birthrate decline in the West without mentioning immigration as a solution is a white supremacist.
Every "population crisis" article in western media is just "WHERE ARE THE WHITE BABIES" in disguise and we absolutely do not have to give any credence to any of them

The Reeves and Mortimer film about looking for Michael Jackson's glove that Ben Wheatley was supposed to direct.

It technically might still get made I suppose. But there's been no news for a while
What's the movie that almost got made but never came together that you're bummed about?

Mine is the William Gains biopic Philip Seymour Hoffman was trying to get made
