So much of American history is just impulsive and extremely stupid elites, who don't believe in consequences because they have never personally experienced them, doing highly consequential stuff because they're bored or believe it might make them richer. I guess a lot of our culture, too.

"We have a different and particularly bad electoral system" is the simple reason behind so many problems that people want to attribute to the character or culture of Americans.
From an extranational perspective, America giving rise to Trump was seen as absolutely, disappointingly inevitable. An uneducated, insular society will allow all sorts of aberrant people to lead them. And so long as America remains an idiot nation, it will just keep happening with different idiots.

I’m starting to worry that if society collapses, my background as an English major won’t help me unless survival in the post-apocalyptic hellscape somehow depends on being able to diagram a sentence.
