4. Yglesias instead seems to implicitly argue that politicians should only do what wins elections, virtue be damned. One wonders what he thinks of those foolish 1850s abolitionists. As Condleeza Rice once said, politics is the art of making the impossible inevitable. That ain't this.

Kinda glad I decided to go onto BlueSky because holy shit
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

3. Leadership is about doing what is necessary, not just what is popular. Read literally anything our founders wrote about virtue, and the inherent risks to a society based on democratic processes to sustain the rule of law to the extent that unvirtuous people gain power.

sean casten dragging yglesias for 35 posts and counting is a great sign for dems, honestly

we need these sorts of dipshit arguments not to be taken seriously by the party and if there’s one thing the thread makes very clear it is that he does not consider yglesias a serious person

the monoquant view of electoral politics is just so fucking facile and childish, "errr excuse me you don't have a top score 🤓☝️" motherfucker that isn't the point of politics

The benefits of doing this is that if Trump is still in the public eye he's going to have a series of hilariously funny meltdowns.
“.. I expect that there will be a systematic undoing of most all of these changes when the Democrats return to control of the White House,” he said, calling the renamings without congressional approval “ludicrous actions.”

That and just a misunderstanding of linear time, if that makes any sense? Don't think of it as "getting back to where we were" because that's depressing AND impossible. You literally CAN'T "go back". Think of it as "The future is unwritten, America. Build what you want."

I also think there's a tremendous amount of just... not comprehending how easily fixable most of the science stuff is. NIH, NSF, etc. is just budget line items and a provision or two of protection from exec orders.

What's hardest to fix is H1-B sentiment.

I see people looking at this and saying it’s because Denmark’s health care system is better than the US’s and so we need vaccination more than they do, except fuck that entirely. That itself is an antivax view. This article makes clear that Denmark is a weird antivax outlier even in Europe.

In China, they are openly stating that Russia will collapse, and they need to seize at least a third of its territory.

“China should prepare for the worst: if Russia collapses, this territory of 7 million km² cannot be lost”, - such an article was published on the popular Chinese resource NetEase

Trump doing a nullification crisis because of the ballroom is not what I had on the bingo card, but I really should have because its entirely on the nose.
the crashout if he's enjoined from building his ballroom is going to be spectacular, it's all he cares about these days
NEW: A hearing is set for Tuesday in the National Trust's lawsuit challenging Trump's White House ballroom plans.

The case has been assigned to Judge Richard Leon, a George W. Bush appointee. He has ordered DOJ to respond by 5p Monday to the Trust's TRO request and set a hearing for 3:30p Tuesday.

ultimately, no one even grieved Charlie Kirk. he was just another thing for the worst people on earth to get outraged over. and when the outrage of real events wasn't enough, they invented new ones.

not even his wife saw his death as anything other than an opportunity.
my read is they were trying to whip up the usual frenzy, but then the effort got blown up by Candace Owens saying The Jews did it
It’s kind of incredible how little has been published about this guy and how little conservatives seem to care. Did people just forget these people were screeching for civil war when they thought he was a liberal?

then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

i dunno what the seventh party system will look like, but assuming the status quo is immutable is inane shit
again i am struck by how to so many its easier to believe in the end of american democracy than the end of the 6th party system
