On a loan with an ~5.5% interest rate,
15yr term has interest equal to ~0.5X the principal,
30yr term has interest equal to ~1.0X the principal,
50yr term has interest equal to ~2.0X the principal.
So for a 50yr term your house will cost you ~3X as much as the original loan amount.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Trump could starve 40 million Americans and ground the nation’s airplanes in the run up to Thanksgiving and not lose a single supporter…at least that seems to be the thinking here.
The Trump administration told states that they must “immediately undo” any actions to provide full food stamp benefits to low-income families, in a move that added to the chaos surrounding the nation’s largest anti-hunger program during the government shutdown. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/09/b...

Shame over poverty is such that people reflexively hide it. I had one pair of pants for years, and we lost our house to bankruptcy. But my mother and stepfather in the same town (with whom I didn't live) had no idea. So many people, barely hanging on, keeping it to themselves, now without food.
