Historian and archaeologist working on the Mediterranean. Used to pretend, badly, to be a dead base ball player. Not sure why I’m here now except I missed people from the old place.
Was watching this clip recently and table 1 all the way. It was sad in a way to see time reduce Reggie—who was so alive with outsized physicality for my entire life—to an older smaller man; but Jesus, I could listen to him talk and tell stories the entire night.

Time to mute the word “alpha,” I think. I’ll miss out on that sweet sweet discourse on early Christian iconography but alas it must be done.

Growing up in NYC, I saw lots of dudes like Trump. They talked a ton of shit and then backed the fuck down when someone better at it squared off on them. It was the one thing those guys respected. Nice to see a fellow NYer do that today.

Jarring to go from Angus King’s recent wailing about the impossibility of stopping Trump to seeing MC Cardamom just absolutely win the dude over

I am way more surprised someone gave a kid an AI powered talking teddy bear than I am that said bear told kids how to find knives and have sex

Writers and personalities just absolutely vomiting out personal details. Just clawing over each other to outperform their rivals and earn the title of who can share the most.

What the myth says: an ancient wise god figure gave fire to man and was revered for this. Betraying the other gods came at great personal pain and loss of status

What Jeff Bezos bears: blah blah wise god blah gave fire blah blah blah blah revered. Blah blah blah blah personal blah blah status

A not insignificant number of NY Times writers seem to be responding to people losing faith in their paper by telling those people that they are stupid

Me, seeing the debates about the AL MVP and realizing I will never again have enough passion to feel anything about this

Calling bullshit on “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme” now that we have added baseball players rigging games to political supercorruption, tariffs, and rising industrial overlords. This is just derivative repetition of the Gilded Age with no elegant rhyme scheme whatsoever.

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.
you ever think about the works progress administration? I sure do. I wish that was a thing now. I would be so glad to contribute my labor to like. A random ass local bridge

Lots of sincere hope here tonight and man this is fun

Ahahaha Mamdani just quoted Cuomo’s dad

Poor JD Vance now has to hit on another widow

The things a war criminal will do to avoid seeing Mamdani win

I once asked a relative, a very conservative attorney, how he could reconcile his views on the poor and undocumented with his faith in a Christ who healed lepers and lived with those on the margins. His reply was “Christ didn’t heal all the lepers,” and I realized there is no inroad there at all.
Indiana's Christian nationalist Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith says "it's not the government's job to feed people" and so tens of millions of people losing SNAP benefits because of the government shutdown represents "a great opportunity for the local church to step up."

I’ve tried talking to my outer-borough family in NYC about their thoughts on Mamdani and they won’t indicate why they don’t like him, just that they don’t. I suspect they’ve been fed a media diet that tells them not to and it stops there.

This is larger than the absolute largest estimate of *all* the barbarian peoples that migrated into Roman world and led to its “decline and fall” but uncritically repeated by a rag with about the same reliability as Jordanes

A generation who first met Alec Guinness dressed in robes holding a pretend sword is angry someone knows Wallace Shawn from the tail end of his career.

What’s the defining moment of Mike Trout’s career? Lots of highlights, but the three that come to mind are:

-striking out against Ohtani in the WBC
-signing that giant contract extension with the Angels and ending his playoff chances
-starting a war between the stat guys and the triple crown guys

January. John Smoltz sits at the dinner table. He sighs and then, eager to shake off the rust, prepares to discuss the ineptitude of his wife’s cooking with the same dripping disdain he reserves for the modern game of baseball.

What a fantastic World Series. Congrats, Dodgers. Toronto, you gave it a hell of a run. I hope the sting of tonight is mitigated at some point by the joy the team brought you.

Fuck, there’s no more baseball
