I sometimes ponder the bridges I burned in small press. The people I pissed off. I don’t feel particularly bad about it.

Personally, I have no problem believing that the WPA and CCC were, at least in part, attempts to quiet revolutionary activity - or at least painted as such. This is the reality of politics. My question is mostly: did it do good, overall? That is unpleasantly utilitarian, I realize.
And I mean maybe he’s right or maybe not, but one laborer’s opinion is pretty weak evidence that doesn’t exactly support your allegation that those programs were essentially an underhanded plot to stymie progress.

The LLMs and mental health discourse is complicated and fascinating. I think some of what we’re seeing is a framing issue: an LLM can *sound* like an authority or a friend, and is treated as such.

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.

genuinely cannot tell if all the children I’ve volunteered with coincidentally have unusually poor motor skills or if I spontaneously manifested into childhood with really good ones. it’s kind of distressing

If you find yourself wondering “why does this app have a built-in LLM agent with seemingly no utility?”, I can almost promise you: the people who built it know it’s not useful now. They are ‘establishing territory’. They hope the technology will improve to a point that it may be useful *later*.

As uh… honestly, mid as Bloodlines 2 is, there’s one thing I appreciate: I’ve long wondered why nobody ever reacts to PCs doing insane jumps and climbing all over buildings in games. Older Assassin’s Creed games sort of do this, but I never felt the response made sense: instant aggression.
