Seems like a good time to remind ourselves that in 1931, when Mussolini forced academics to sign an oath of allegiance to the fascist regime, only twelve refused.

Speaking of farming the government...

Here in Illinois, $67 million in climate money is funding strip/no till on 650,000 acres for three years

A *temporary* bump in reduced tillage on ~3% of the state's corn & soy acres for a practice that, whatever its other benefits, has minimal climate impact.

Farmers are a very small voting block. But both parties really want to claim to be farm friendly thanks to the consultant class/big ag narrative that farmers represent true American values and need continuous pandering to. This doesn’t consider the reality of US ag and alas never works for Ds.

The “climate smart” practices that the industry successfully lobbied for are pretty bogus: cover crops, no till, nutrient mgmt…. They are impermanent, and as Emily notes often not additional. Their value is contested in the agronomic literature. Classic big ag farming the government. Bipartisan too.
The Treasury's guidance for 45z, the Clean Fuel tax credit, indicates its moving forward with allowing biofuels producers to account for "climate smart agriculture" — which could ultimately just make the credit an even bigger subsidy for ethanol heatmap.news/politics/45z...
The Climate-Smart Program Trump Didn’t Kill (Yet)
New guidelines for the clean fuel tax credit reward sustainable agriculture practices — but could lead to greater emissions anyway.

Bad Bunny’s show is exactly why I don’t agree with people who say climate is no longer at the forefront. Climate is intrinsically tied to issues of justice. If you can’t see that, it says more about how narrow you view climate and less about what is happening. Literal power lines. I mean, come on!

The convergence of Boricua socio-cultural-historical perspectives, music, communication studies, renewable energy and policy, critical theory, US and American history (!) and Bad Bunny fandom tonight is truly magic. I don’t care for football 🏈 at all but I am having a blast.

I gotta thank y’all posting about the historical & sociopolitical meaning of Bad Bunny’s choices. This is going to make tomorrow’s class pretty special. The NYT Popcast gave me some more context, eg the 64 on his jersey at the beginning is the original official number of deaths from Hurricane Maria.
We are going to be working on a timetable of events leading to and following hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico - including effects on the grid - in my intro to sustainability class on Monday. You better believe Bad Bunny will get a shout out.

Bro literally came out and said “it’s our labor and culture that has always made the Americas great: y’all are just the beneficiaries of slave owners from sea to shining sea,” and I am here for it.
It was transforming the biggest NFL stage in the world into a sugar cane plantation that did it for me.

Like, the multiple layers of turning an American icon into a plantation and highlighting the history of exploitation of Black and Brown bodies by the NFL and American colonialism simultaneously?

It’s the weekend everyone, so you know what that means. Time to drink two polar seltzers and do a thread on the power transformer shortage. Without transformers, we don’t get a clean energy transition. And as energysky knows, there’s been a shortage due to covid, supply chain, & labor constraints 🔌🔋

The term agricultural exceptionalism was coined in the US specifically in regards to labor, though it is now used more generally to describe lax environmental regulations (which disproportionately impact farm workers), favorable tax treatment at the state and federal levels, gag laws etc.
