Seems like a good time to remind ourselves that in 1931, when Mussolini forced academics to sign an oath of allegiance to the fascist regime, only twelve refused.

Note how all the fossil fuel requirements in Inflation Reduction Act were written into statute, like it literally says six lease sales in the Cook Inlet over 10 years.. and most of the renewable energy and climate implementation in the IRA relied on rule-making and agency discretion.
These lease sales are required under the Big Beautiful Bill. The last Cook Inlet sale in 2022 was mandated by the Inflation Reduction Act; that one was overturned under the national environmental policy act. Now we’ll see what happens with a weaker NEPA. www.marinelog.com/offshore/boe...

What scares me is: 1) the size of the department - it is not small by my standards, 14-16 faculty members depending how you count, includes meteorology; 2) the fact that the state requires geologists to be licensed; 3) geology alumni tend to be very active and generous (as the thread makes clear).

Spring registration has started, and enrollment looks good for one of my spring classes, Environmental Policy (recently rechristened RollerCoaster). Once again, it’s gonna be loads of fun and checking the news up to the night before I teach any major law/policy.

Few things irritate me more than seeing publicly funded social science research at land grants reinstating the obvious AND omitting systemic issues. Wow conventional US farmers won’t do X so we need to give them more 💰& technical assistance rather than make changes to the corn soybean hegemony.
