Just for the record, a complete 🧵 of my 🧵 on adaptation.

Part I
Since COP29 is turning into an adaptation COP, I am bringing some of my past threads on adaptation from another place here.

PART I: A 🧵 on adaptation and development over the years, digging deep back to the 1990s through to current scholarship.
Pleonexia. Learn this word. It’s all around us.
As Christmas approaches, I reflect on my word of the year: pleonexia — an ancient Greek term describing the insatiable desire to take more than your fair share, even when it harms others. In 2025, we saw that everywhere.

A few months ago, I was invited to review a book proposal for a major UK publisher. In the list of possible competing titles, I found out that somehow (in my sleep?) I had also written a book on transformative adaptation, which until that point I had had no awareness of…
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

God jul från biståndsministern!

Inget beslut jag fattar med stor glädje, säger Dousa.

Nä vi fattar. Man måste prioritera.

Och just denna jul prioriterar vi mindre till världens fattigaste för att ha råd med skattesänkningar till de rikaste

Guess which horrible song is now stuck in my head? And maybe yours too. Sorry 😫
This time of year I teach a series of intro lectures on development geography. Today was a class on stereotypes of development and white saviourism. Among other things, we watched the music video from Band Aid from 1984. The Charity & xmas no 1 song 'Do they know it's Christmas (Feed the world)?' 🧵

I’ve seen two kids post that the Brown University shooting is the second school shooting they’ve survived.

This should enrage and radicalize everyone.

Kids shouldn’t have to survive one shooting, let alone two.

No more thoughts and prayers.

It’s time to address the guns.

Quite fascinating.
Just got served this on my insta. I see this quite a lot from the collapse / fatalism folks: first the message that it's explicitly "too late" to mitigate climate change, then the follow-up of "we're not giving up, we're still doing things" and then a clarification that the 'thing' is...not material

I often think about the @unccd.bsky.social COP6 in Havana in 2003. The leaders who joined Fidel Castro on the stage at one point included Robert Mugabe and Hugo Chávez. It was definitely one of the wildest experiences of my life enb.iisd.org/desert/cop6/...

On the 10th Anniversary of the Paris Agreement, you’re going to hear a lot about the progress we’ve made — people saying we “are” heading to 2.5 degrees heating instead of four.

I deeply regret to tell you that this is complacent misinformation.
