Part I
Since COP29 is turning into an adaptation COP, I am bringing some of my past threads on adaptation from another place here.

PART I: A 🧵 on adaptation and development over the years, digging deep back to the 1990s through to current scholarship.

’Undermining that confidence by dismissing UN climate conferences as pointless risks slowing this progress. Cop critics like to think of themselves as brave tellers of truth to power. They may end up merely being Donald Trump’s unwitting accomplices.’

The Swedish King stepping in it today in Brazil by suggesting that the multilateral climate change process is likely to fail and that Europe does not have any responsibility to pay for climate change impacts on the Global South. He is wrong and should be prevented from making such statements.

This paper is a reminder that we all need to set boundaries as academics, however more importantly, we need to normalise a system that does not penalise people for not working until they burn out.

We need to be worried about this. 1st some countries (Saudi Arabia) refused to welcome the 1.5 report, now they (and others) are flat out refusing to set a date for when the AR7 can be approved. Heads in the sand sort of decision-making on climate change is not just foolish it is evil necropolitics.

Good point here.
Annual reminder that the UNFCCC and Paris are not the drivers of change. Remember that as we enter COP-frenzy season. We need to be realistic about what UNFCCC can do.

There's a reason why I left that orbit.
Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions rise again in 2024, up 2.3%.

This is our collective progress, 10 years after the Paris Agreement.
