Not at all surprised to learn that Bad Bunny has a historical adviser. His halftime show was a reminder that our history and culture are deeply intertwined with the rest of the western hemisphere. We should think of his performance as part of #America250. #SuperBowl

Pop star Bad Bunny needed a Puerto Rican history scholar. UW–Madison had just the one.
Bad Bunny collaborated with UW–Madison history professor Jorell Meléndez-Badillo on Puerto Rican narratives that accompany the new album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.”

For those invested in this or with an interest in cats who pee in inappropriate places: I did take him to the vet and he has crystals in his bladder, which are painful. Likely caused by ph change from stress. We are treating him now. Also may have diabetes 😵‍💫. Poor Mio.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Why do the best paper ideas always get formulated in the middle of the night? Last night I wrote an amazing first paragraph in my head…but didn’t want to wake up too much by dictating it on my phone and now I can no longer remember any of it…

‘Here’s the final irony. Conspiracy theorists and climate deniers insist governments are exaggerating the threat. In reality, the evidence increasingly suggests the opposite.’

Governments have been warned about climate change for 70 years. They’re still suppressing the worst news.

Bonjour, just a small reminder.
Hello does anyone who researches wind turbines want to help with a school project (a short podcast)? In English. ☀️💨🌍🌱

Yes, this is right on. I am so tired of this fake AI stuff, even my child knows when things are AI. It's no fun to look for interior design ideas (I am restoring an old house) when half the stuff is AI. www.bbc.com/news/article...
AI 'slop' is transforming social media - and there's a backlash
Social media has been flooded with fake, AI-generated images and videos. But will the majority of users actually care?

This is so sad.
1/x 🧵

ICE has booked at least 3,800 children +

(Drawing by a 5-year-old detained in Texas with her mother. “I am 5 years old” is written at the top. Lower down, next to stick figures, are the words “let us go.” You don't have to know your Bible to hear myriad echoes here, but phew, those too.)

I am not involved in the @visualisingclimate.com conference but it seems like these are discussions that could be had there too.
Thought provoking 🧵. It's interesting that the examples here are often used in arguments as if they are a knockout blow - but both statements in each pair are true. It's just that one of them will feel more conclusive to you.
The optimist vs pessimist divide in #climate debates isn’t usually about the data.

It’s about how the same graphs are read, what people emphasise, what they discount, and how they interpret pace and stakes.

Here’s what I mean 🧵👇

Since data and stories alone are sometimes (mostly?) failing to communicate climate change, this initiative looks very promising.
Join us in Bologna, Italy, 4–6 Nov 2026 for Visualising Climate — the first global conference fully dedicated to climate data visualization and its power to transform public understanding of a changing planet. Come see the data.

It's cold outside and snowy, too! Is climate change a hoax?

Not at all. Winter still brings cold weather even as the planet warms.

In fact, warmer oceans + a rapidly warming Arctic can even increase the intensity of winter storms and heavy snowfall.

That's why I call it Global Weirding!

This is good distraction and interesting for cat lovers and science nerds (and all who are both).
In my ongoing attempts to give you a break from *gestures widely* THE HORRORS:

Let's talk about the utterly bizarre science of cats' purring.

Here's a weird starting point:
There are NO cats (Felidae) that can BOTH roar AND purr.

Cats that roar = genus Panthera
Cats that purr = genus Felis
