Professional labor photographer. Unions for all. Birds. Whales. Cats. Hydration. Maybe a dash of democratic socialism. Not necessarily in that order. Too much optimism for the current moment.

Cute content skeeted often, not with the news cycle

Our enemies are cowards and we're going to defeat them.
Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.
Alright LA Rain is over for the next couple months, time to find cormorant breakfast in the morning. Sleep as well as you can, everyone! 🪶

If you click on my profile and look at my banner you'll see Darwin the chahoua gecko and it's remarkable the similarities in his 'eyelashes' to the feathers on these birds around their eyes.
This is a more poorly lit eye, but it was physically closer, so i was more willing to risk a slower shutter speed(1/500) to get the ISO down(450).

Great opportunity when it was a captive audience! (drinking from a feeder) 🪶

For every beautiful night picture of death valley there are 12-18 unfathomably hot awful hours.
Highway #190 near Panamint Springs, heading east in Death Valley National Park, looking toward Towne Pass. It wasn't too bad on this day—only like 110° out. #Photography

Find yourself dark skys. If you live in the United States do it between March and October on a moonless night. You'll feel DIFFERENT. Maybe you'll completely ruin your life trying to capture pictures of it!

bsky.app/profile/did:...
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

2025 was awful, but we also saw people organize and find strength they never knew existed

We can't influence everything in 2026, and it will be painful, at the end the end of the day we can only control what we can control

That being said, we know one thing is certain:

It's baby owl season soon

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.

I finally cancelled my spotify today, happy ENOUGH with Qobuz, but it still has major pitfalls, and given the company just missed one of their best opportunities ever to capture users without any attempts, I'm not convinced they're practically trying to change to a broader audience, afew notes 🧵
"I switched to Qobuz. It's an odd name but the vast majority of your favorite artists are there and you get free playlist migration, or you can import songs you bought on band camp, as well as free playlist migration from Spotify."🪶

Working in my year end photography recap / 2026 optimism post and I want to put this in it, but I featured this bird last year too. Feels like something Brett Banditelli should be against. Maybe I'll make it Bonus Content. Whatever the hell that means.
Holy shit I fucking got it. I've been awake since 4:03am, I drove 95 miles, got here at 7:10am, and at 4:29pm one of the peregrine falcons attacked TWO pelicans and made contact on THREE attempts. 17 useful frames.

Here's a fast edit on my phone.

Let's fucking go and log off! 🪶

I *hate* the phrase “speak truth to power.”

That’s not my job. My job is to figure out the truths power is keeping secret and to tell everyone else.

Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

Back in June, I tagged along with the legendary Mira Nair for an afternoon canvass in Richmond Hill. Production delays (by yours truly) kept this from coming out during the election, but we wanted to share this one with you for the holidays. I hope you enjoy it - this is one of my favorites.
In less than a week, I will be sworn in as the next mayor of New York City. It was only possible because of the more than 100,000 people who volunteered on our campaign. Here’s a story about one of them, my mother.

When I first moved to Seattle, I worked on the reception desk at a large clinic. One day, trying to make an appt for a new patient, she gave her address as "The Highlands". I told her I needed a street address. She replied huffily, "It's The Highlands. There are no street addresses." That's me told.

We organized.

This is the story of one store that showed the power of solidarity, and won.

This is union power!
