In this new report from me & @rhymeswithocean.bsky.social for @cplusc.bsky.social & @publicgrids.org, we argue the current electricity affordability crisis is caused by the rules of private ownership. To solve the crisis, we recommend banning shutoffs now and using many tools to expand public power!
Overcharged: The Rules Of The Electricity Affordability Crisis
Nearly a quarter of adults in the US—or over 52 million people—cannot pay their power bills.

Does this mean states could technically begin to enact even stricter standards than what the endangerment finding supported before? Is there any silver lining to this supercharging some policy, or is it more "very uneven from now on and worst case race to the bottom" world now?
The final rule removes the regulatory requirements to measure, report, certify & comply with federal greenhouse-gas emission standards for motor vehicles, & repeals associated compliance programs, credit provisions & reporting obligations for industries…

I don't object to the mantra that we are going to win but neither do I think the costs will not be steep, the human losses high. That's what I find my breath trapped beneath the weight of even as I know this cannot hold forever.

The last administration should have prosecuted everyone they conceivably could have but because they lacked the courage to do what is right we are here.
ICE has now spent over half a BILLION dollars just on purchasing warehouses around the country to convert into detention camps.

If these mega-camps are utilized to the full capacity ICE intends, they'll be the largest prisons in the country, with little real oversight. www.ajc.com/politics/202...

always so funny to me when people are like “how am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. “why did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay

This pattern I'm describing is in no small part linked to the reactions people are having to moral injury, I would guess

I hate to say this but I think things are just going to keep getting increasingly chaotic and morally shocking before this tidal wave of sadism finally recedes

Its important to identify for yourself what moral injury (as witnesses & those coerced) feels like and how to recognize its after effects

Thread. I learned what moral injury is from Martha and have found it, sadly, a very useful concept.

The ‘abolish ICE’ door is cracked open and every one of us needs to push and keep pushing.

“Liam’s father, Adrian Conejo Arias, said the family was in hiding. He cited a bomb threat at his son’s former elementary school and ICE agents patrolling the Columbia Heights home they no longer live in.”
‘He’s not the same’: Father of Liam Conejo Ramos says 5-year-old continues to suffer
Some people thought they say the 5-year-old during the Super Bowl halftime show. But Liam is still in hiding with his family, after he and his father were detained and then released from a Texas deten...

this is injurious to moral, social, and all human life
I arrived too late to an abduction yesterday. Ice vehicles boxed in a food delivery driver on the highway. They took him, and when I came on the scene (with a few other neighbors in cars), his keys were still in it. We found his phone, a debit card, his car title and registration.

Takes an enormous amount of courage + determination. It is so easy to pretend none of this is possible to change, or that you in particular are not the one to join in to help change it, or that it's 'too late' for you in particular. Just really encouraged by the stories i hear like this.

Just as there are some really bad and grim things dominating the headlines, these small butterfly effects are much more invisible but still so real. I am talking people quitting their jobs, retraining to do something else altogether, having hard convos with their families + friends.

So many people became educated in 2020 about the world of injustices they had always been told to ignore. Some feel it had been hidden from them by everyone they ever trusted. What we're seeing today is the outcome of those folks being serious about their education and making radical life changes.

The Democrats in Congress should keep going until the job to defund all of this is done.

"There are now at least 224 such facilities, more than double the number when Trump took office, holding at least 70,000 immigrants in violation of basic due process rights."

Wow excellent @mtkonczal.bsky.social Vibecession piece

1) specific essentials inflating faster than overall inflation

2) inflation makes first time home buying especially tough (wonkish)

3) hard to plan w/ price uncertainty

4) high borrowing costs

Why Affordability and the Vibecession Are Real Economic Problems
There are many ways inflation makes people worse off even when real incomes recover, especially for essentials.

isaac is right.

We certainly need to continue doing this in New Mexico, and from the ground up.
Kind of a key lesson in just one policy defeat here: the only way to climate action that means anything is to build durable, political power, not count on elite safety and support. The right is out to crush us, but we can organize and win.
Yes, the CHS became a pivotal political issue in 2024 elections and some CHS supporters lost re-election.
