When the US Civil War ended in 1865, people in Washington, DC lit so many torches and bonfires that it created light pollution. Spectators were shocked to see such a thing for the first time, and wrote about how incredible it was that they couldn't see all the stars.
I think people today don't understand just how dramatically the night sky has changed - it looked like it does in super remote areas *everywhere* before the invention of electric lighting, and light pollution that obscures the sky has gotten dramatically worse in the last 25 years.
If you ever have the experience of seeing a night sky out in the deep countryside you can understand this; it really is a fundamentally different experience, and I can't imagine it not being formative to people.

The entire Disney universe is just a gaslighting of Goofy. Your best friend buys someone who looks just like you and has them run around naked in the backyard? And you just continue on at the function like everything is okay?

This reminds me of the complaints of several of the Sad Puppies. They went to conventions and were treated with the ordinary friendliness extended to newcomers and not with the instant enthusiasm they considered their due.

What these people are doing to the power of calling out real antisemitism, in an incredibly dangerous time of surging global antisemitism….man, it is just so worrisome

In all honesty, I think this is a big part of why Avenue Q and the like have aged so poorly. The mantle of "we are rude to everyone" was so fully taken up by fascists that there's just no room for it on the left (and good riddance)
Being nice and normal is an act of rebellion against the government now. They can't stand it. They're the angry guy from the meme

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.

I'd believe this anecdote because I've met guys like this at conventions. People do ask (politely) about their work and they can't pitch it because what makes it special is that they are the specialest boy. They go to panels and hear queer and BIPOC writers talk about their work and think "ah ha". +
This shit is made up, actually

12YO girl signed up to do “stand up comedy” at the talent show. 13YO boy decided to heckle her. Teacher started to tell the boy to leave her alone, but the 12YO comedian said “no, no, let him go, this is the closest he’s ever going to get to having a conversation with a girl.”
What's an insult you'll never forget?

abolish ice. theres no middle road on this and democrats will have to be held to it.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

It's social degeneracy. The classics are in decline. Pig Greek and pig Hittite are largely unstudied even in the best pre-Kindergartens of New York.

Dijkstra was right
i hate everything about this attitude. there's a reason other engineering professions look at software engineers with disdain. software is eating the world, and this fucker summarises the monstrous responsibility that comes from this as "velocity matters more than perfection"?!
i want to scream.
Can't wait for the loosened up, non-perfect, but quickly shipped AI-enhanced updates to hit my banking and insurance services next year.

Im sure there will be no issues there at all.

I was going to post Elisabeth Moss talking about how “Fred Armisen’s greatest impression is that of a normal person” but when I looked it up to get the wording right I learned AI has somehow turned it from being a scathing post divorce condemnation to being a really nice complement
