I had never heard about Makaton - this is an interesting read. Some interesting connections to language/thought debates too (ie does the restricted Makaton sign vocab restrict the users?)

Unlike most apps these days, Scrivener does not use AI in any way. However, if you’re on a Mac, you may see an AI prompt.

I have so many issues with this podcast with @earlkmiller.bsky.social . I think that this podcast nicely shows why I have trouble with such approaches. Lets go through some of the claims.

This is an interesting thread critiquing some strong claims, and well worth a read. I’ll note for the record that this post is true of basically all neuroscience right now, but only because it caught my eye :)
The jump from “there are waves” to “therefore evolution pushes those waves around to create volition” is pure teleological storytelling. There is no explanatory bridge from wave patterns to agency here, just a metaphor upgraded to mechanism.

I blogged a more detailed review of this paper. Overall I like the approach, but the paper needs to take care not to oversell what it is currently capable of doing (it IS reformulating memory in an ecologically tractable way, but it is NOT currently a demonstrated viable alternative)

AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action

It is genuinely insane how bright and distracting car lights are now
I wish we, like, regulated shit nowadays. Between car bloat, blinding headlines, and neighbourhoods packed with rental suites but no on-property parking, driving is an absolute nightmare now.
Nearly all drivers say vehicles' lights are too bright in study
The study, commissioned by the Department for Transport, was completed by Berkshire's TRL.

I just realized I don’t like the phrase “as far as I knew” because it implies how much you actually don’t know. I’m not going to stop using it, but. I don’t like it as much anymore.

new paper by Sean Westwood:

With current technology, it is impossible to tell whether survey respondents are real or bots. Among other things, makes it easy for bad actors to manipulate outcomes. No good news here for the future of online-based survey research
