Makaton seems to be more that signs, though, and I don’t know enough about BSL to know how different they are and how useful the differences are for the target user groups of Makaton

It also seems to be in a very fascinating fight with BSL about why it needs to even exist - intriguing!

Like, why invent and copyright a whole communication system for people with learning difficulties? With spoken language you’d just use a subset of the whole available language - I don’t think it would occur to anyone to copyright that set 🤔

Reading more on this. What an intriguing mess of issues around language, what counts as one, why have so many systems, what’s the best to teach and to whom…I don’t think spoken languages have to put up with any of this 🤔
