New for @propublica.org: Drug-testing cutoff levels (the amount that triggers a "positive" result) vary from lab to lab. Kaitlin tested "positive" for Codeine at a hospital in New Jersey, but she would have tested "negative" if she were in the military. www.propublica.org/article/drug...

Five years ago tomorrow, thousands of the president's supporters stormed the Capitol.

Trump has since dubbed Jan. 6 a "day of love."

Scroll through @propublica.org's massive trove of parler videos -- organized by time and location -- from that day and judge for yourself:
What Parler Saw During the Attack on the Capitol
ProPublica sifted through thousands of videos taken by Parler users to create an immersive, first-person view of the Capitol riot as experienced by those who were there.

So we now appear to be up to at least 80 Venezuelans killed.

For an operation that anonymous admin officials said yesterday was"virtually flawless."

STEPHANOPOULOS: Why wasn't congressional authorization necessary?

RUBIO: It wasn't necessary because this was not an invasion. We didn't occupy a country. This was an arrest operation.

Stories built on "U.S. officials," especially ones published just hours after an action, are rarely the actual inside story.

And papers shouldn't be playing like they are.

Maybe this is old fashioned, but I don’t feel like a news organization should… love things?
Incredible. CBS Evening News announces five new “simple values” — instead of their “38-page handbook” — as they roll out Tony Dokoupil is lead anchor.

One of those values is simply: “We love America and make no apologies for saying so.”

You can make LLMs say almost anything. A news organization reporting "what grok said" is engaging in journalistic malpractice. It doesn't know. It just creates plausible sounding words in response to a prompt.

I've hit that age where the idiots i knew in high school are no longer wasting their time on Facebook trying to rope me into their latest MLM pyramid scheme -- because they've now moved on to shilling for their adult kids' MLM pyramid schemes.

The admin called them "rioters" and "agitators" who would face the full force of the law

This is a tired strategy: accuse journalists seeking response and more information of "stalking" and "harassment"... rather than engage even to simply offer a "no comment." People in power, especially taxpayer-funded ones, should have to answer questions: www.propublica.org/article/prop...
Our Reporters Reached Out for Comment. They Were Accused of Stalking and Intimidation.
Our journalists reach out to people they’re writing about to ensure fairness. But in this environment, they’ve found their efforts to do so are more likely to be vilified than appreciated.
