When I’m done writing my book I may take a crack at a “corruption is a first-order counterintelligence threat” story.

And US spies know it: CIA has used rampant corruption in places like China in the past to go on recruiting sprees. Mutatis mutandis.

this didn't really click for me until just now but Julian - who is presented as a magus figure until the disillusionment - is also at Bennington rather than, say, Harvard, because it's easier for him to call the shots there and there's more of the type of kids who will become enraptured by him.
You have a bunch of spoiled rich kids essentially bundled off somewhere harmless and out of the way and then everyone else we see at the university is kind of just an ordinary schmo. The clique is so absurd because they’re pretending to be somewhere they’re not

THIS!

i think there is an entire generation of political leaders and consultants who don't actually know how to *lead* a political movement and think their job is just following polls
none of these people (inclusive of UK labour) seem to understand that voters want their leaders to *lead* them, not reflect their own ill thought preferences back at them

i strongly, strongly believe that good writing is downstream of clear thinking and a strong understanding of the subject matter at hand. without fail, tortured writing comes from writers who don’t know and can’t think clearly about anything.
Oh man! This paragraph is brutal. The best thing about this review is it's not trying to be mean. It's just listing how bad the writing is.

For additional context here, these are the relative turnout levels of each of the congressional special elections we've had this year

This race got super nationalized - relative turnout ended up being huge

But to me, that makes this the most encouraging special for Ds so far

Actually Stranger Things pretty good. That last episode really makes the whole slog to get here seem worth it. Who knew that using very simple ideas from D&D to tell a story will provide an emotional and satisfying climax that feels well-earned even if it was kinda hokey and dumb getting there.

Trump is a criminal who is letting criminals loose upon American society
When this criminal was jailed, the judge told David Gentile and America: ‘This is a warning to would-be fraudsters that seeking to get rich by taking advantage of investors gets you only a one-way ticket to jail.’ I guess not

there's no way to explain our politics without the media being overwhelmingly complicit
Now only did White House pool reporters not stick up for their colleague who Trump repeatedly called “stupid” but you can hear them thanking Trump a few minutes later after he ended the Q&A. Sad stuff.

"a single person of this demographic may have committed a crime, therefore we must punish the entire demographic" is a policy response you may recognize from fascist governments dedicated to ethnic cleansing elsewhere.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

This is insane ofc but also completely belies the entire idea of “The Free Press” and ”The Marketplace of Ideas”. The power of these lies was their convenience as cover for pushing an otherwise obvious agenda.
I couldn't believe this could possibly be real but apparently it is. The new head of CBS News believes that most Americans are pedophiles and rabid gun nuts.

Unfortunately I think the actual hinge is so, so much dumber: the Comey letter
bush v gore is the hinge upon which basically everything awful from the last quarter century swings on
i don't think that bush v. gore is the *worst* ruling in the history of the supreme court, but i do think it is the most openly *corrupt* ruling in its history. a real disgrace.

Many of his comments this year suggests he consumes a ton of popularist content and very little pointing out the many flaws in that thinking. I assume his peer group is the audience that consumes popularist content, so he would need real intentionality to get other perspectives.

Again it’s not good that the most prominent leaders of the party keep insisting it’s a trap to talk about “identity” when the Trump administration is pushing white supremacy.
Speaking at a Texas Tribune Festival on Friday, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg criticized the Democratic Party for failing to reach everyday Americans, arguing that it “got sucked in” to a conversation about identity. #TribFest25

The former U.S. transportation secretary said the Democratic Party should focus more on issues gripping the country, such as health care and housing affordability.
