Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich

PTAs best work uses surrealism, a period setting, and a careful balance of psychological and sociological richness to explore the contradictions of modern life. OBAA plays too much at Political Sophistication and comes out uncanny. I liked it but it won't hold up; it barely holds up now

Also for those who want to talk about affordability more than anything else, your compromise is that ICE has $85 billion now. All of that money could go to people who need it!
Abolishing ICE is polling well and even polls positively with some Republicans at the moment. It could absolutely be a motivating and winning midterm issue that could flip control. Giving up before things even really start is a sure-fire way to keep people home.

Seems like a societal inflection point that the Trump administration absolutely gutted FEMA and gave hundreds of billions of dollars to ICE

Winter storm leaves over a dozen dead, prolonged power outages and brutal cold | CNN
The massive winter storm that dumped snow and ice across the US left behind over a dozen deaths and at its peak knocked out power for over a million electric customers amid bone-chilling cold.

Seeing some ‘it doesn’t matter if Bovino is out the real issue is [Miller, Horman, Noem]’ and I think that simultaneously downplays the importance of pushing out any one of them while also underestimating the institutional issues.

"Nothing matters until Miller is gone" is the wrong way to frame things. The right way to frame a people-led victory like this is "Everything matters until Miller is gone."

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump — 3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.

This is an emergency of the gravest kind. “We can do it again. Nobody can stop us” he said. It is the absolute and solemn duty of Congress to impeach and remove Trump from power immediately.
Watch this. Watch again.

"This incredible thing last night... We have to do it again [in other countries]. We can do it again, too. Nobody can stop us."

If you want people to believe something, you should say it clearly, directly, & repeatedly. If you’re saying something else, you are failing to move people in your direction. Even worse, you are moving them in another direction, shifting the Overton window away from where you want to be.

When you give time and attention to something, you are teaching people that thing is important. That doesn’t mean you should never tackle an opponent’s strengths, but you need to do it thoughtfully, in a way that doesn’t just emphasize how much worse you are.
On a fundamental level this is why "moderate on cultural issues" isn't just insufficient, it's harmful. There's been a lot of dissembling what this moderation looks like in practice (EK trying to dodge with "I'm just using abortion as an example"), but it's going to look something like this:
However, at the Senate and House levels, Dems responded and spent heavily, but with ads that were nearly indistinguishable in message from the right wing ones. After $866 million in attack ads ($729M R, $137M D), the initial public support for mass deportations is unsurprising.

"Dems will get blamed for a shutdown" as opposed to what, all the friendly coverage and positive credit they'd get for caving yet again? This whole premise is built on a delusion about what the alternative is. There's no cowering in the corner and being so inoffensive they won't still attack you.

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

It's such a strange, revealing argument. Why should any of us give a shit about protecting people in Epstein's files? Why do they think we do? Since when is the most sacred tenet of society "privacy for relationships of the rich & powerful with the pedophile child trafficker"? Reveal them all.
GOP greatly overestimates the number of fucks GenX and younger give about Bill Clinton.
