Every major free speech org has said the IHRA definition suppresses constitutionally protected speech. Every major human rights group has said it suppresses legitimate advocacy. The scandal is that Adams adopted the definition, not that Mamdani rejected it. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/04/n...

As @billmckibben.bsky.social wrote about the need to transition to solar and other renewables as quickly as possible, "it’s going to be hard to figure out how to fight wars over sunshine."

No country has ever been invaded for its renewable energy reserves.

The sooner we switch off oil and gas, the better.

Maybe he used to be better at hiding it, but Rubio is dripping with condescension and contempt these days. He's gotten a taste of being totally unaccountable and really likes it.
BRENNAN: You're describing the regime as still in place. I'm confused why the Trump admin only arrested Maduro. The chief thug who controls the police & has $25m price on his head is still in place

RUBIO: You're confused?

B: They are still in power

R: You're gonna go in & suck up 5 more people?

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as “the adult position,” akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Let’s be very clear — war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.

Maybe the leaders of the Democratic Party were so resentful of him because they knew he was so much better at doing their job?
The mayor of New York City is doing more than the senate and house minority leaders
Zohran Mamdani, the new mayor of New York City, called President Trump on Saturday to personally object to strikes the U.S. had conducted in Venezuela and to the capture of its leader, Nicolás Maduro. Mamdani accused Trump of violating international law.

Instead of Booker calling for Congressional Republicans to vote for impeachment due to Trump’s illegal war, he’s saying “there are still three years left of this administration” while listing even more of Trump’s impeachable offensives!

Local advocacy is more important than ever. It's overwhelming to think about how to fix [motions to everything] but I can make it safer for seniors to cross the street, for kids to bike to school, for people to have places to meet in public space... all of which build and strengthen our democracy.
Instead of whatever this is, we should have a government getting lots of new homes and apartments built, lots of clean energy built, lots of high speed rail and transit and bike lanes built, human rights for everyone, economic & healthcare opportunities for all, & innovation that leads the world.

In the vein of posts today from @billmckibben.bsky.social @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social @volts.wtf @brooklynspoke.bsky.social and many others about how we can fight back against the forever wars by embracing a vision of a world where oil becomes irrelevant, I offer the following:

"...if you’re for peace and democracy, then a solar panel is a valuable tool (and a valuable symbol, a peace sign for our age). Every one that goes up incrementally reduces the attractiveness of the oil that underlies so much conflict and tyranny." Via @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social

Depending on how long Trump drags this out or how many other countries he decides to illegally invade we might also be in store for someone in 2028 saying, "Can't change horses in midstream."
Eagerly awaiting the first time a pundit says it’s inappropriate to criticize the president because we’re at war

The mayor says something really important about something that's bugged me for a long time: that we force grieving families to relive their trauma over and over again as they lobby elected officials asking them to do the right thing. I am so glad to hear him say those days are over.
"I'm so sorry that we could not have done this earlier...to have saved the loved ones in your life. But I thank you fopr the work that you have done...to ensure that this pain not be felt by others who call this same city home." — Mayor Mamdani at McGuinness Blvd. presser youtube.com/shorts/uwAYI...

If all Mayor Mamdani and Flynn do for the next few weeks is dust off canceled or watered down Adams-era bike projects we’ll be headed in the right direction. This is great news.
We’re waiting for the mayor at the McGuinness press conference. Meanwhile, DOT commissioner Mike Flynn has been handed, and put on, a make McGuinness safe — support which we never saw from the Adams administration.

Not even the biggest thing wrong here, but remember when it was some sort of issue for the Right that Obama used a teleprompter? Trump can't even look up from his printed notes.
Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."
