this is absolutely correct, but what people need to understand that it refers NOT ONLY to the way work is produced and enjoyed BUT ALSO what defines "success," and that's actually going to be a very hard pill for people to swallow
With the WP book section closing and other publishing news, I think literary people really need to adopt a punk rock mindset. It's DIY or die these days.

Wired: Billie Eilish's theory of property
It’s time to put Billie Eilish’s theory of property out to pasture, Richard Epstein and Max Raskin write.

You want 'British values', here's national treasure Ian McKellen performing a speech by national hero William Shakespeare about how we should be humane and welcoming to migrants and refugees. bsky.app/profile/lala...
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

You'd never guess from this post that it's about Briar learning to play a vintage 1980s miniature synthesiser.
one of my favorite things is getting tricked into enjoying math or finding math, like, a "fun easy life hack." i have dyscalculia, or at least had it growing up, so i very much associate math with "difficult, dull slog that makes me feel stupid & humiliated and makes others think I'm lazy or obtuse"

This is happening with Bourbon as well. Jim Beam moved to heat pumps and now they don’t need a gas *pipeline* anymore.
Decarbonising the pint 🍺

Clean heat isn’t just about homes. A brewery in Sussex shows how industry can lead - ditching gas-fired steam for high-temp heat pumps that recycle waste heat into the next brew.

Yeah I will say I spent a a lot of my life thinking I was being a sophisticated Marxist by condemning vulgar tendencies which saw particular capitalists and members of the ruling class as evil and the problem. No no, I would say, it is the system! Well, ok, maybe: but also they are evil turns out.
My favorite genre of Epstein emails are powerful people emailing WITH JEFFREY EPSTEIN about how MeToo has gone too far and the woke mob must be stopped.

I'm worried that the broader public isn't really understanding the Epstein Files. The problem isn't that everyone in the files is a secret pedophile, it's that all the people are corresponding with him because they *don't care that he's a pedophile*. It's a story of elite impunity.
You can look at the Epstein files and conclude that only bad people have billions of dollars, but I think it’s also possible that having billions of dollars cauterizes your humanity

I agree with this but as someone who's in a lot of Signal group chats, please don't fight in the Signal group chat, have a fucking coffee together or at least a video call, I am begging you.
To those lamenting seeing activists fight over what often appears to be trivial bullshit: if it makes you feel any better, this is absolutely nothing NEW, and it doesn’t appear to be an impediment to success in and of itself.

To those activists: take it to the Signal group chat more often. please!

These ginger-spiced pears in wine are easy to make and are perfect if you have a few not-quite-ripe pears in your fruit bowl. The recipe is FREE to download during February.

This easy to follow recipe, taken from Richard II's cookery book, uses two wines and, for its spice, 'blaunche poudour', which gives a warming, gingery kick. Included are the original medieval recipe,

Like the Grenfell inquiry (how it evidenced a complex network of private and public institutions of neoliberal urban governance that caused the fire, and not one institution people could blame), the Epstein Files paint a similar picture of elite power networked and diffuse, but no less violent.

After Careful Thought, I Have Decided That Our Ship Actually Is Being Attacked by the Kraken

For a long time I resisted the idea that the multiple tentacles tearing at the thin wooden planks of our vessel represented some kind of 'sea monster' threat. But when the facts change, I change my mind.

Some immigrant parents, fearful of their children facing similar uncertainty if they were to be arrested, detained or deported are taking the extreme step of legally transferring parental authority to teachers, co-workers, fellow parishioners and neighbors.
Fearing ICE, parents make plans for their children’s care
Some families give legal authority to others to make key decisions about a child’s life if a parent is detained and deported.

This is also connected to that whole thing where all their fantasies of protecting their own *family* centers on enacting violence and not, like, vaccinating their kids and making sure they're prepared for a power outage etc.

Even people they know, they only think of in terms of violence.
rightwingers see people caring about others in their community and instead of finding that inspiring they think it’s some sort of grand conspiracy because they don’t understand what it means to care for others you don’t personally know
