Like our excellent Governor Andy Beshear who managed this and the plane disaster adroitly and with compassion.
The Trump administration told states that they must “immediately undo” any actions to provide full food stamp benefits to low-income families, in a move that added to the chaos surrounding the nation’s largest anti-hunger program during the government shutdown. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/09/b...

Eleven of the parties in the provincial parliament of Limburg have now requested the Limburg government to look into the possibility of creating a (temporary) memorial for our Black American liberators in cooperation with Eijsden-Margraten (where the cemetery is located).

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

Western Library was the first library operated by African Americans in the USA. First place to train Librarians.
Some cool library history here in Louisville.
So cool! Prince *loved* libraries. For example, this is one donation he made from his charity a few days after 9/11 to save the Louisville Free Public Library, the first library in the community to serve African Americans.

I hate that Target is self immolating like this. I used to like the place.
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

Two panels about black GI’s who liberated the Netherlands disappeared in the Margraten War Cemetery.

This cemetery is both understated, solemn, and impressive and really drove home the steep price of a free country when I visited as a teen with my fellow “Bridge too far” interested friends.

incredible that these guys have a massive hard on for a country that, if it were a state, would rank behind kansas in terms of wealth and which would be a total backwater if it weren’t economically integrated with more functional countries

Come for the hideous French 19th century battleship designs and nautical disaster stories, stay for the accurate history of science.

Came across this story earlier for…reasons. And I was wondering, like you do, if one could do this with a Seestar.
In 1676 Ole Rømer saw eclipses of Jupiter’s moon Io run late when Earth moved away from Jupiter and early when approaching. Earth’s orbital diameter was known from Kepler’s laws; from this he was the first to estimate the speed of light (at 220,000 km/s) and was accurate to 75% #AstroHistory

Great governor to have when there’s an emergency.
The governor walked through the half–mile debris path today, here's what he said:
“I’ve had to order freezer trucks in a pandemic, I’ve walked the path of an F4 tornado through my dad’s hometown, I’ve seen towns hit by flooding we can only describe as biblical and what this scene is, is violent.”
