I was telling my therapist about HEALTH AND SAFETY and he said "seems like you read a lot of books and they affect you" which, yes, honestly what is therapy for at this point
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

C saved until just now to tell me about being behind in line at the Jewels from a guy buying exactly sixty pomegranates. There was a language barrier with the cashier. What do you do with sixty pomegranate? He was insistent on getting the sale price.

I wasn't able to get tickets to The Women and Children First book event tonight. But it's streaming online so I'm going to watch that. It's about to start but I'm going to make popcorn. It usually takes them quite a few minutes to get through the land acknowledgment

there's a whole section in ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM where Arendt just bashes the Boers at length, I found it funny and jarring
i can handle this one: it is because he is an illiterate boer ape
I know there a thousand other points to make here, but: why did Musk put a picture of the Odyssey in a thread about the Iliad?

I think it's newsworthy and worth reporting that someone said this. But I think it's also basically impossible to predict events that far away in these circumstances. Consider incentives to say this. Consider that they didn't announce this week's conclusion of activities in advance.

The piece about monkey farms I read last night was so depressing I almost couldn't sleep, so this piece about Irish cocaine dealers who coöperate with Hezbollah is a good change of pace. Two of the Irish gangsters are named Gary and Gerry, they are uncle and nephew.
Police gathered incriminating evidence about the Irish drug lord Daniel Kinahan, but he operated from both a technological and a geographic remove from the gory scenes on the Dublin streets: like many other wealthy criminals, he had moved to Dubai.

When you dig into it, it is pretty interesting how much of Washington's global power in the post-War era came down to taking iron ore from Duluth, and taking coal from southern Illinois and the Appalachians, and combining them at preposterous temperatures in Gary.
