I’ve been writing about the politics and impact of Donald Trump on the US and world, with special attention to Europe and the University of Michigan, and most of it is free to read. This thread, in order, brings it all together. I hope it’s useful as a resource on the different issues.

I hadn’t noticed that the Muskrat in his hammock is reading… Spengler.

How authorial changes to Comet in Moominland, between 1946 and 1968, shifted the fear from Soviet invasion to nuclear war. Plus a lot about telescopes.

they have the gall to suggest to authors they've opted-in that they volunteer to evaluate the LLMs' suggestions regarding their own work.

“Issues that are easy to spot are disappearing, and what’s left are much more complex issues that take a while to find,” says Shaukat. “That’s what worries us about this space at the moment. You’re almost being lulled into a false sense of security.”

RFK Jr's HHS had a press call to announce they were — based on no new data — overhauling the childhood vaccine schedule. Senior officials at HHS answered questions but refused to go on the record, saying we could only attribute the quotes to "officials." www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...
U.S. overhauls childhood vaccine schedule, recommends fewer shots
The U.S. no longer broadly recommends vaccines for flu, hepatitis A and B, and RSV. Health officials say the guidance aligns with that of peer countries.

Lots of background for this:
Rubio “is the architect of what is arguably Trump’s single most cynical policy: the scheme to appoint drug cartel bosses and their cronies atop the governments of every Latin American country, in the name of fighting drug cartels.”

I have a new paper w Andrea Prat & Jake Spitz. We show that Republican appointed Supreme Court Justices vote in favor of the richer party by over 70% today, as compared to D’s at 30%. In the 1950s and both were at 50%. This strong trend may contribute to rising inequality. www.nber.org/papers/w34643

WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

A lot of the Trump Republicans’ actions can be reversed and their effects mitigated in a few years. The damage to vaccination levels and confidence might take generations- and much suffering and death - to repair.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), run by Oz and his boss, RFK Jr., will no longer require physicians to report vaccination rates.

Instead, they plan to start having doctors report if they’ve discussed “alternative” vaccine schedules.

If your concern is about fraud, and making sure the poorest receive funds, block grants are the opposite of what we should do. They allow states to redirect the money away from the neediest.
OTOH, there is very persuasive evidence that SNAP really helps people.

During Fiona Hill's testimony to Congress on Oct 14, 2019, she described how Trump and Putin discussed exchanging Ukraine for Venezuela. The quid pro quo was if Trump refuses to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion, Putin would not help Venezuela (a Russian ally) resist a US takeover.

New guidance from the Trump Administration's CMS cites Secretarial discretion to DROP mandatory state reporting of immunization rates for children + pregnant adults covered by Medicaid/CHIP

This is close to 1/2 the children in the US and more than 40% of births

I’m trying to think of a whip who became prime minister in Europe. Failing. Keeping electeds in line and happy isn’t great training for mobilizing a broad coalition or running a country and the latter also are not side gigs. Plus do senators want a leader who rivals them as a potential president?

IMHO the job is a legislative floor leader that awkwardly substitutes for a general party leader whenever there is no president/presidential candidate. So he’s speaking Senate, Jeffries speaks House, and everybody else (activist or just ambitious) gets to compete to actually do some Leading.

I’ve given up.

I’m trying to imagine a scenario in which a hostile foreign power kidnaps Trump and JD Vance’s immediate response is to hand power to Kamala Harris
