Salut! We're sitting at just a hair under $4k raised, and I'm astounded. Thank you all so much. So many of you have donated, so many more of you have shared the fundraiser so that more people might see it, and many of you have written kind things while sharing it....

Seconding this. Geocities was so popular that they couldn't keep up with demand at first.

LiveJournal had to close off applications for a year because folks overwhelmed them

Something Awful had to start charging for forum access to deal with the load.

And so on.
I was present for the birth of the web, the explosion of personal sites, and the blogging revolution, and you know what we never had to do? Beg people to use our shit.

I loved this piece but I keep seeing quote-posts that are like "CRITICISM IS DEAD" and "LISTS KILLED READING THE BOOK" and that hyperbolic overreaction is also! not! helping! there are great critics and great criticism out there still! acting like it doesn't exist is just gonna hasten its death!
When the AI slop summer reading list dropped last year I knew I had to write about making book lists. Thanks to @thebaffler.com for letting me go long with bewildered nostalgia & regret on 20 years of Internet book culture & how we made the slop book list inevitable. thebaffler.com/after-the-fa...

The labor involved in making lists was as close to the opposite of a transcendent reading experience as a disillusioned culture worker could get.

Hi we're abstaining because it sucks ass, hope that helps
AI sits in billions of phones. Refusing to engage won't stop it, just leaves vulnerable people without knowledge. Demand ownership and control, not abstinence.
Abstinence From AI Is Not the Answer
Opinion | Refusing to use AI won’t protect society. Responsible resistance must include gaining knowledge about it.

Analog media can not constantly advertise to you.
There has been a movement back toward "traditional media" - vinyl, but also CDs, DVDs, and books. Why? Because digital media were hyped as having all this convenience, and they do...but we've also seen that they're controlled by companies who want your money and won't stop trying to take it.

last year I wanted to follow genre awards more closely and then 2025...happened...so 2026 is good enough!

Philip K. Dick finalists were announced! I have read zero but luckily I run a newsletter collecting people's opinions about books. :D

You can recreate these with fruit punch and chia seeds! Sort of, anyway.
Orbitz (1996-1998): A line of clear, non-carbonated beverages, filled with dozens of tiny, suspended balls of what was essentially gelatin. Came in flavors such as Raspberry Citrus, Blueberry Melon Strawberry, Pineapple-Banana-Cherry- Coconut, Vanilla Orange, Black Currant Berry, and Chocolate

This is a big reason why I've been trying to use physical media at my library whenever it's on offer, even if there are digital options.

Anyway, if your local library has a friends of the library chapter, set up a recurring donation and help your library out.
No surprise to librarians, but perhaps surprising to users, demands/prices for ebooks /audiobooks are killing public library budgets. David Szalay's book, Flesh,” costs DCPL:
$28.99 hardcopy
$59.99 ebook
$69.99 audiobook
DCPL owns hardcopy; rents & must repurchase ebook & audio book every 2 yrs.
Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.

reminded of when I watched a bunch of authors call a hobby reviewer—not a pro reviewer/critic! just a random person online!—talking about their least favorite books of the year a monster and a bad person

sometimes the call is coming from inside the house
So on @withouthistoryband.bsky.social's recommendation, I tracked down the essay "Necessary Golems" by sci-fi critic John Clute this morning.

And yeah, people need to read this, cause boy does it feel relevant.

I don't know where this "the midterms will be cancelled" rumor is coming from, but it's all over my TikTok FYP, too. In my deeply voter suppressed state, elections are handled at a county level. What, are the Republicans going to call off their OWN elections, literally happening right now? lol no
Your regular reminder that there is no legal path from martial law to suspending elections in this country.

That doesn't mean there is no path. It just means that we need to reject the framing that the federal government has any legal authority to cease elections.
