I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

Atwood on the nail
#ReneeGood laughed (gently) at Jonathan Ross
So he killed her, making sure with 3 shots
Then called her a “fucking bitch” as her car veered out of control & crashed
A hate crime
US #misogyny is as grim as that of the #Taliban
Just manifested differently
Women die from both
To paraphrase Margaret Atwood…”men are afraid that women will laugh at them, women are afraid that men will kill them”

The average American gets more protein than they need because we are a country of meat eaters and meat is delicious.

We do not need more protein. We need fiber. We're literally in a colorectal cancer crisis and while the reason is not fully understood what IS understood is fiber cuts your risk
I thought this was a joke but it’s an actual post from the White House: “we are ending the war on protein”

How about ending the war on the health of this country?

NEW from me:

Job growth has been functionally zero over the last five months, as the US sinks from a “low hire, low fire” labor market to a “no hire” one.

That slowdown is hitting young & low income workers the hardest 🧵

There was approximately two seconds of veneration at gunpoint for Charlie Kirk from the MAGAs, which provoked a backlash so profound that I’m pretty sure Kirk’s visage will still be being used in AI slop twerking and fetish memes 20+ years from now
It is funny the extent to which Charlie Kirk has no legacy though, and that his death was basically career self destruction for Ezra Klein

Spent all morning doing my 2024-5 tax. It highlights two things:

1. I spend way too much money on books (but at least I can claim them).

2. I make way too little money from books.

Such a stupid career choice. Please buy my books to make tax time less depressing.

ICE was just going up & down central getting out their cars with pepper spray and guns, but we had so many legal observers it made a huge difference.

If you’re vulnerable at all we are asking you stay inside today & remember don’t open your door without seeing a judicial warrant signed by a judge.

i think powell's response here is a demonstration of the folly of the idea that democratic accountability requires presidential control. what if the president is not acting in the public interest? you want independent agencies to be able to push back and pursue their *congressional mandate*
Powell, showing more guts than almost any GOP legislators:

"The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Fed setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President."

I'm struck by MAGA pearl-clutching for the poor ICE and CBP agents allegedly threatened by peaceful citizens trying to monitor and limit their lawlessness. A half century ago MAGA types were denouncing the trouble "outside agitators" were causing for poor, beleaguered Bull Connor and his men.
