Time for everyone paying attention to Minnesota's General Strike to read up on Aquatennial & Bloody Friday - Minneapolis
The last general strike in Minneapolis was in 1934.

It started in May, leading to a series of small battles between strikers and police. The two sides agreed to a contract on May 25.

Employers reneged in July, and police opened fire on protesters who flooded the streets. Two died, 67 were wounded.

At some point soon, I'll write more about what happened in the US *after* Japanese American detainees (many of whom were citizens) were released and WWII ended. Another set of concentration camps persisted here, but they've often been forgotten, because the country dodged a bullet. [4/4]

Gitmo went from being for immigration detention to War on Terror detention. French camps for Spaniards fleeing Franco in '30s became enemy alien camps during WWII, many detaining Jews who fled Nazi Germany. After France fell, those camps eventually deported detainees to extermination camps. [3/4]

Goals shift and expand. This doesn't typically lead to the kind of extermination camps that arose after almost a decade in Nazi Germany. But it does tend to have other follow-on effects that make subsequent, often worse, forms of camps far more likely to come into existence. [2/3]

Two issues I'm pondering. One is that you can't move this many people without inflicting tremendous physical and psychological harm on those deported and on society itself. The second is that left in place for years, mass detention on a whole new level will be normalized. It rarely vanishes. [1/3]
Concerned about ICE's $45 billion plan to convert warehouses into immigration detention centers? This is what they'll look like inside. From ICE's plan for the Social Circle, GA facility. Each little dot: a person. www.socialcirclega.gov/home/showpub...

That's what I worry most about in a sense -- the US has normalized a great deal of incarceration, more than any other country, and now they will normalize more (at a time when people are feeling very carceral).

The second part of this is BAD for democracy! Progressives & leftists should oppose anything that takes powers away from the Council (a diverse body elected by smaller communities) and gives to the Mayor (a city-wide office disproportionately elected by wealthy, white areas of the city).

This package would also entrench the offices of City Operations Officer and Community Safety Commissioner (which were created by ordinance) in the charter and remove the council's authority to confirm any mayoral appointments other than those two offices, City Attorney, Police Chief, and Fire Chief.

(Thank you Eric for taking on the mostly thankless job of being a commissioner, and taking some load off of @joshmartinmpls.bsky.social to be the internet's sole charter commission translator)

This mini 🧵 + conversation in the replies is really important.

Community building is, like, 85-90% maintenance, which requires consistency. It's not about no breaks/absence, but it is about reliability & endurance.

That's what we need to keep winning in the face of empire/ fascism/ capitalism.
Hey, fellow privileged white people... I know we're exhausted but it's really important that if you jump in to volunteer in an ongoing capacity, you do your best to actually show up consistently.

Even if that means having to make some small sacrifices in your personal life for a while.

Lots I could say on this, noting the *most* crucial race in MN for trans folks is the AG’s.

What we’ve done here is remarkable given national trends, we need to continue that.

And a gentle note that few mainstream journalism outlets have aided and abetted this harm more than the NYT.

I really hope we start collectively thinking about all re-entry with the same compassion as we do for those leaving Whipple.
As the pedophile führer's ICE Nazis are ordered to release people they've kidnapped, they do it in the dead of night to make sure it's as cruel and brutal as possible. Fortunately, compassionate Patriots are there to meet them and make sure they're ok and driven to their homes.

Of all the things we are doing in MN, this one is just beyond. Imagine being released from hell alone in the cold. And a total stranger has waited all night with a blanket just to be ready to hug you and carry you home. Every job we do is crucial, but this one is what restores humanity and dignity.
