I’ve always had our devices on a when they stop working well or break beyond my ability to repair upgrade cycle, which tends to be 4-5 years. And now that DIY parts are expensive enough to justify AppleCare for all our iPads, I expect those to be only upgraded when too obsolete for Apple to replace.

This is so soulless, I can't stand it. We have BRAINS. We can USE THEM.

THIS

It saves a tremendous amount of overhead (money) and time (money) and complications (people who are eligible dropping out because they can't prove they are), but mostly it forecloses an extremely common form of fiscal parental abuse.
Periodically I see people justifying means-testing to ensure The Rich don't get stuff for free when they can afford it.

I see the logic, but we can just tax them more.

Plus, the BIGGEST thing not means-testing solves is

*deep breath*

IT STOPS RICH PEOPLE FINANCIALLY-ABUSING THEIR KIDS ANYMORE.

Literally EVERY parent should ban Roblox
Every parent whose career has to do with online safety also bans Roblox.

Always remember:

Trump is not an anomaly for the GOP, but an expected result of the past 75-ish years of deliberate, informed leadership choices.

They didn’t change strategy after Nixon; they doubled down.

Trump isn’t the end of MAGA.

The GOP MUST suffer consequences for the hell they unleashed.
Stephen Miller saw actual competent lawyers as a huge threat to his plans for authoritarian rule, and so he started removing them and replacing them with hacks and sock puppets who would give whatever advice he wanted. In this, he followed a precedent set down by Cheney in the Bush 43 presidency.
White House blew past legal concerns in deadly strikes on drug boats
The Trump administration sidestepped skeptical lawyers across national security agencies as it pursued a military campaign against alleged narcotraffickers, officials say.

UPDATE:

I’ve deleted OKCupid as well, not just because they are also owned by Match Group (which owns Plenty of Fish), but because a knowledgable friend informed me:

“OkCupid is notorious in my professional community for its horrifying data practices.”

As if the creeps IN the apps aren’t enough.
Plenty of Fish deleted my drag performance video off my profile. I appealed the decision. I just saw their response and final decision, refusing to restore the photo.

I wrote them back, saying I found their decision hypocritical and frankly discriminatory. Then I deleted my profile.

truly impressive how much Target’s success relied on Woke

turns out that’s all that really differentiated it from its competitors and when it gave customers a reason to go elsewhere they had no reason to come back

Also, if you look at that timeframe, it's also when companies stopped letting people support their executive function by having a secretary

ADHD causes far less trouble if your wife and your secretary run your life for you

I keep saying this but it’s at least very interesting that many doctors didn’t think ADHD persisted into adulthood until you couldn’t buy Ritalin over the counter anymore and most people stopped smoking.
yeah tbh I’d really rather be on ADHD meds and NOT have to develop a two pack a day cigarette habit as someone who’s never smoked before just to function
I guess I can drink twelve coffees a day while chain smoking if you want me to do this in a socially acceptable manner, I just don't see how that's better for my physical or mental health than Vyvanse, y'know?

we may in fact be entering the era of incumbent disadvantage

the internet has supercharged thermostatic backlash because it is biased towards negativity - negativity gets clicks

right now this is helping us because it’s turning Trump deeply unpopular, but it will hit his Dem successor too
I think the story of the last century or so of politics is that sustained backlashes against parties are basically extinct. We went from the Democrats being shut out of power for decades after the Civil War to Watergate only keeping Republicans out of the White House for four years
Lots of interesting stuff here, including Newsom being weirdly popular among young voters www.theargumentmag.com/p/the-covid-...

This is pretty amazing. This guy just won a solid victory in Bucks County, PA, one of the most important swing counties in the country, by *explicitly and deliberately* making his race *all about* nationalizing ICE raids. Confirms the point about this now being a winning issue for Dems.

on the one hand it would be ludicrous for them to release extremely damaging information when they control what gets released

on the other hand they are very, very bad at their jobs
lot of people on this app seem really committed to the notion that nothing damaging will come out of the Epstein files.

My local Mom for Liberty is really turning up the Transphobia Panic as the evidence that MAGA is full of sex pests from top to bottom comes more to light.

I wish for justice and for Americans to learn a lesson here, but I’m not optimistic.
NEW: The White House intervened on behalf of accused sex trafficker Andrew Tate during a federal investigation.

“It was so offensive to what we’re all here to do, to uphold the law and protect the American people,” one official involved said.
The White House Intervened on Behalf of Accused Sex Trafficker Andrew Tate During a Federal Investigation
Federal authorities were chided for seizing electronic devices from Tate and his brother, and told to return them, records and interviews show. Experts said the intervention was highly inappropriate.
