Geek at law.
A friend: "Art meets fair use question. Is there a bright line point--"

Me: "No."

(It turned out to be more First Sale Doctrine than anything else so it was as much a "you're good" as any possible question can be, but still.)

Hey #LawSky, I'm looking for a referral to a lawyer who handles business disputes esp. around dissolution, in California. Anyone here know anyone for that?
DMs should be open too, if you prefer to send privately.

Also sounds like people who don’t understand books. “I want to set my books up so nobody needs to talk about them online or writes fanfic” is such a wild thing for someone to say if they want to make money.
I’ll say this much: This reads exactly like what it is: people who discovered romance five years ago and decided they had all kinds of amazing new ideas to “fix” it. Connections between books? That feel kind of cozy to the reader? How did no one ever think of that?? www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/b...

"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

Always and forever.
to me the takeaway from that scene with Deep Throat is not “follow the money” it’s “the truth is these are not very bright guys and things go out of hand”

There are so many stories.

Too many, not that any are acceptable.
This is the horrible tradeoff so many kids make: predation is the price of admission to a "welcoming" community where they can be themselves and gather with other fans.

I couldn't ask my parents for help or they wouldn't have let me go to any more cons.

The creeps know that the fuck they're doing.
What I love about SFF Cons is that they are refuges for people to share their joy of whatever nerdy thing they love. It's supposed to be a place of celebration where you can be what you want to be.

I hate that creepy con guy ruined it for her. I hate that there are so many creepy con guys.

We are invited to assume that the New York Times did not know what Epstein was telling Landon Thomas about Trump. I decline to extend that charity.

If Epstein wanted the NYT to write about it, he should have made it about a Democrat and gotten a white nationalist hacker to leak it to them.

New York Times social media guidelines prohibit expression suggesting partiality on things like ICE, execution of foreigners in fishing boats, or whether law is a thing.

However, tipping off notorious serial pedophiles about other reporters is absolutely fine.

There is a very good reason why the thing I say most consistently about situations like this is "the violent rhetoric policy is my least favorite policy to write and enforce, and the policy that creates the most upheaval among the userbase when it is applied"!
"bluesky will suspend you for anything vaguely resembling a death threat" is maybe the single most consistent moderation policy they have I don't know why anyone is surprised by this one

yes, even if it's a reference to song lyrics

I love that there is a new translation of this.

I don't know how to feel about this from the description: "In an age when the idea of a 'planet B' seems tempting..."

I feel like taking the line "there is no Planet B" and saying "well, maybe there should be!" is missing the forest for the logging.
For a wild, somewhat more recent version of this, in which the cannonball was full of sangfroid, see Jules Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon"- out soon in a new annotated edition from @mitpress.bsky.social, edited by @anaklimchy.bsky.social and with an essay and annotations from meeeeeee

For those who wonder why I get so bent out of shape about NCMEC and the air cover they provide to Donald Trump, see the text with that Instagram photo. "The critical importance of NCMEC's mission to protect children". Just, you know, not *these* children. They're on their own.

"This could take down Democrats, too."

I know. And I frankly wouldn't give even an itty bitty damn if it implicated every Democratic man in Congress, every Democratic hopeful for 2028 and every Democrat who has even thought about running for office.

Down with the sex predators, wherever they are.

To recap: Jeffrey Epstein offered a NY Times reporter photos taken in Epstein's kitchen of Donald Trump and girls in bikinis *and* implored the NYT reporter to put this information in the public discourse in 2015

What did the NY Times editors know about this offer?

On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...
